i found a good deal locally on an a-bolt and was wondering if the action is worth building or better to work with a better action like a 700. i already have 700 action but thinking about picking the a-bolt up for a 6.5-06 build i have in my mind.

it's my understanding that there aren't as many bolt on upgrades for an ABolt action. Interested on what others say because I have an A bolt long action just sitting in my safe. Nothing against the gun, but it would make a great donor
They use permanent loctite on their barrels. They are big pain, browning states they don't make their rifles to be rebarreled. Three lug designs, I really like the thought of them though.
I'm doing one right now and the key is to find a smith that has some experience with them. It takes some precautions to get the barrel free without tearing it up, but it's not as bad as internet rumors would have you think. My smith has done quite a few of them without any problems. The "problem" comes in that you can't find jack squat for aftermarket parts.
McMillan isabout the only quality stock maker that inlets for them unless you go to a laminate, then there's a few out there.
Ken Farrell makes Pic rail bases for them, That's where I got my 20 moa base for my build. It's a good heavy duty unit.

The stock trigger is damn good with a spring kit in it. Available from Brownells
There is no DBM available for them that I'm aware of (If anyone knows of one PLEASE post it up) and honestly I'm thinking about drawing up some prints for it and having a friend of mine that has a CNC run a couple of them for me. My brother has one too that he'd like to build up.
Right now I'm thinking I'll probably use the existing bottom metal on mine, and maybe explore building DBM down the road a bit.

I have a A bolt in 300 Win Mag that I sent to a local gunsmith and he was able to throw a really nice shilen barrel on it for me. He's done hundreds of a bolts and never had a problem with them.

Like Curt1521 said, the actions are much smoother then the other rifles. I have both A bolts and 700's. And there is a reason the A bolts out number the 700's in my safe.

Heck, try it out. The A-Bolt is a great design, but lacks many aftermarket upgrades. Every factory A-Bolt I've been around has shot well right out of the box. I know that Moon at Crescent Customs has experience with A-Bolts.
