Buffer Detent hole on AR

This has been a mystery to me as to why a few of my lowers have the buffer detent hole work out. One one lower the hole is so out of round the buffer detent flies out and won't hold the buffer & spring back. Cause all kids of issues as you can imagine. I haven't been to worried about it as a $150 lower is replaceable. I was looking at my RR M16's and one of them is wearing out as well. I have halted all shooting of my M16's until I figure out what the hell could be doing it. I run H2 buffers and various LWRC lowers. I though it was my SHRIKE upper causing the issues, but I have a lower that did it before I got the SHRIKE so not sure what is doing. I will try to post pics of the hole. Any ideas what would be doing this?

Re: Buffer Detent hole on AR

Probably one or more of the uppers or bolt carriers (do you have several uppers or bc's of the same brand??)you have is enough out of spec it is allowing the buffer to hit the retainer.

Close the upper slowly and watch the rear of the bolt carrier...it should slightly push the buffer to the rear as it closes, if it doesn't, there's your problem.

The buffer should never touch the retainer during operation.

Re: Buffer Detent hole on AR

OK I must have a BC out of spec. All are LWRC and Colt M16 carriers.
I'll try to find the one that is tearing up all my lowers.
Would a short SBR be hard on the detent hole? I wouldn't think so.

Re: Buffer Detent hole on AR

Anything I can look for on the uppers to determine which one is causing it?
I run 4 LWRC piston uppers and a Colt M4 upper on the M16's.
I have never seen a detent hole bore out before.
I will try to get some pics posted.
My shutterfly website I host all my pics on changed things up and I can't figure out how to do it now. Any suggestions on the pics?

Re: Buffer Detent hole on AR

Pics aren't needed. Only one thing can cause it.... the buffer is hitting the retainer.

Use one of your newest Colt BCG (it will be in spec) and install it in an upper.

Install the upper with the front pin only.

Make sure the BCG is pushed all the way forward.

Slowly close the upper and watch that the BC is slightly pushing the buffer to the rear as it closes...if it's not, the buffer will beat the retainer and cause the problem you are seeing.

90% of the time it's the upper out of spec, once in a while the BC or the lower.

I've never seen it on a Colt, but a lot of parts guns have the problem. Most never get shot enough for it to show up.

Re: Buffer Detent hole on AR

FWIW
I had this issue and it was due to my not installing the CAR receiver extension/buffer tube properly by one turn.
It allowed the retainer to protrude a bit to high and mangling ensued.

Re: Buffer Detent hole on AR

curious if you're seeing gouging in your buffer tube along the bottom from carrier tilt. Also curious if you're using the heavier buffer spring with the shrike. Do you have the newer 1 piece bolts for your lwrc upper? Do you have any noticeable gouging in your upper?
