I'm interested in how members on here would go about building a 223 rem (NOT AI) rig.

I'm just gathering opinions and options.

So the question is,

What would you buy to do your own 223 rig?

Re: Build a 223 rig. How would you do it?

Take a Remington 700 with 223 bolt face, Broughton 1:8 twist barrel finished @ 22 inches no heavier than a Heavy Varmit Contour. True the action, lap the lugs, have a nice chamber put into it. Bed the 700 into a Manners or McM of your choice. Rifle Basix trigger and DBM if you want.

Re: Build a 223 rig. How would you do it?

I purchased a PSS in .223 here and had it threaded at 20" and will be placing it in an AICS with .223 AICS mags. My buddy did it with an sps all stock and it shoots 1/2 moa or less. So before I send mine off for any work, I want to see how it does from the factory first. You could get a diamond right from the get go.

I do think PSS and SPS tacticals have a factory 1/9 twist barrel.

Re: Build a 223 rig. How would you do it?

This is mine, trued Remington, bartlein barrel 1-8 finished at 22". Alot of fun to shoot and practice with and she will run to 1000. I shoot the 75 A-max for both comps and Varmints.

I don't mean to hijack your thread Alderleet, but what do you guys think of starting with a tikka t3 action over the remington due to the fact that companies are now making dbm's for the tikka that accept the 223 aics mag with a little trim work. Only reason I am asking because I built a sako quad trainer, and I thought it would be a better replica to have a tikka instead of a rem700.

Re: Build a 223 rig. How would you do it?

Remmy 700, Lilja #5 1:14 twist 18", mcmillan Edge stock, 1 piece scope mount, prolly a 3-9x40 scope.... nice and light, easily packable... and good in the truck...

oh ya, cant forget the DBM since i'd want it for the truck.. see a coyote, slap a mag in, cycle the bolt and bang....

Re: Build a 223 rig. How would you do it?

Oh dont worry, it isnt a hijack. I was just seeing the general consensus about a 223 rig.

I went with a howa action over a remington for various quality reasons

Re: Build a 223 rig. How would you do it?

i'd do a #2 Brux 1-8" cut to 20" on a R700 and drop it into a first generation TI take-off stock. i have a few .223s and the light/handy ones seem to trump the heavy pigs.

Re: Build a 223 rig. How would you do it?

Surgeon 591 .223
Fluted Rock 8 Twist w/ AAC brake for suppressor finished 20"
McMillian A1-3 GAP Camo 2 flush cups left side w/ TAB sling
Williams BDL BM
Huber trigger

Dreams do come true!

Re: Build a 223 rig. How would you do it?

Go with a skunkworks action on the group buy. He'll chamber, cut, crown and thread a barrel for you for $200. Then just get a trigger, stock and bottom metal. That's what I'm doin'.

Nice stick!

Getting everything together to build your same set up. Just secured a Bartlein 1-8. What are you getting for velocity with the 75 Amax? Any regrets going 22"? I'm debating between 22" and 24".

Thanks, Kevin

Re: Build a 223 rig. How would you do it?

McMillan A4 USMC spec stock, rem700 sps T in .223 20inch, Egw 20moa base Badger USMC rings 30mm, S&B 10x fixed, Harris 6-9SBRM w/ podloc and a TAB sling, that will be my next build.
After I shoot it out ill get the action trued, new barrel etc...

JamieD,
What velocity do you get with a 22" barrel and 75gr Amax? I have been looking at a 223 to shoot to 1000 yard f class matches.

Wait just a damn minute here. Is Kimber making a crf 223 now, it would appear so. I've been looking for one of the rare pre 64's that have a 223 bolt face and crf, only thing I've been able to find is push feed. Never really looked into the Kimbers but it looks like I need to. I've got a soft spot for the model 70 too.

This is being nit picky, but there were no pre-64's with a 223 bolt face. There were some with a 22 hornet bolt face opened up to shoot .222's.

For the OP, probably not what you're looking for but i'm currently having built:

#2 contour pac-nor, 1-8 twist, micro-fluted, 22"
Sako vixen action, trued
Hi-tech specialties stock

Re: Build a 223 rig. How would you do it?

I've heard there were a very small number of M70 classics (CRF but not pre 64) built in 223. Good luck finding a 223 CRF M70 though. I've got an old Sako in 223 and its a sweet rig. The action is actually sized for the cartridge and the trigger is the best I've had from the factory. This is a light rifle which works great for actual hunting. I've always thought a good LTR in 223 might be a nice set up also.

Are you looking for something light weight or are you looking for a long(er) range rifle? How heavy of a bullet are you looking to shoot? Do you want a detachable mag or no?

For reasons I don't always remember, I wanted both my rifles to be light-weight. Due to personal taste, I wanted something with CRF, or as close as I could get. That's why my 17 Rem was built on a Daly "mini-mauser" and my 223 is being built on a Sako L461 "vixen". Neither is what many would consider a true CRF, especially compared to a CZ 527. I wanted a floor plate, and that ruled out the CZ. I also like the 3-position safety of the Mod 70, which I added to the Daly. I would have added it to my Sako build as well, but Ed Lapour is the only person offering one, and i didn't think it was $500 cool. I probably could have saved myself some time and money and just bought a Kimber, but where's the fun in that. Personally, I've never been a big fan of the 700 so it was never in the running. If I had it to do over again, I might change my mind.

If you're looking for a detachable mag, the CZ527 Varmint kevlar is pretty nice out of the box. It comes with a 1-9 twist which will rule out shooting some of the heavier bullets.

Personally, I like the CZ too. It's my next project. I purchased a regular Varmint with the 1-12 awhile back and plan to rebarrel it with a factory 1-9 I acquired.

Hope this is of some help.

Re: Build a 223 rig. How would you do it?

The top is a CZ527 in .17 Remington, and the bottom is a CZ527 in .223. They aren't exactly tacticool, but they will both shoot the lights out of every custom I own. 5 round mag, tiny action. I cut both down to 18", added badger knobs, bedded them, etc. the .223 started out as a varmint kevlar, but I want them to match, so I sold the stock on got the wooden American.

If you are looking for a real use rifle in a lightweight platform, this is how I would go.

here's how they come in the Varmint Kevlar stock, I just didn't care for the weight

You will have to modify the bolt handle like this in order to clear large objective scopes.

Re: Build a 223 rig. How would you do it?

Here's how I did it, Rem LTR original 20" .223 with AICS 2.0, Zeiss 6-24x56 with Mil-Dot and an Ase Utra suppressor and I feed her with Scenar 69 grains and she delivers tight groups out to 500 meters basically, probably as good shooter as my AI AW .308 out to 500 meters
