I am throwing together a Remington tactical, Mcmillan A2, Badger bottom.

My old Us Army Sniper buddy said this was the best set up:

1/11 Spin
Use only 175grain
20inch Barrel
Match Crown Thread
No free float just pure solid to stock

I was under the impression free float is the best way to go...

On top of that Remington sps tactical 20 inch comes in 1/12

How much difference does the twist make. from 1/11 to 1/12?
since I am going to drop in a 1/12 what would the best type of bullet/ grain be?

Re: Build Help .308

I would free float. Reason being barrel will cool easier and the barrel having no contact with the stock you will have better repeatability in poi. With barrel contact to stock you can sometimes put pressure on the stock which may push the barrel slightly different each time.

I would try the 175s 1nd 155s. The 155smk did well in my Rem LTR.
I think seating depth of your bullet will matter more than 11 or 12 twist.

I have a PAI 308 with 21in barrel #7 Rock creek 1/11 twist and it does great with the 175smk.

Just my opinion and exp.

11 twist would work

The 155s SMK if they shoot in your rifle. If not try the 175s SMK. The new 155s have a BC close to the 175 but you can drive them faster. This helps buck the wind and reduced drop. 155s will also have less recoil

The longer the barrel the better. I would go as long a you comfortably can and shy away from crazy heavy barrels.

Pillar bed the action free float the barrel.

+1.... 1/11 with 175 or 155's (I am currently trying to whittle it down to just one...but am using both with great results! But I handload which makes a difference)... Very few rifles don't benefit from free-floating the barrel! The A2 stock, although a good stock, would not be my 1st choice.... I used one on a .300 win mag for awhile and it rode the bags really nice, but was a bit cumbersome in the off hand position...JMHO....
