Build precision rifle on k98/Husqvarna?

Have a .30-06 I bought 25(?) years ago-Mauser '98 w/Husky 30-06 Sporter barrel, generic Walnut stock.
Can I build this for 1000 yard or would it be more cost effective to start with a Rem 700 (or some other)?
I know, at the minimum, stocks that are advertised to fit this are darned uncommon.
The magazine box also seems to be a little shorter than I would like to run the longer heavies (190 or heavier).
It does currently beat the crap out of me if I shoot more than a few (steel buttplate).
I would like to run '06-I am familiar with that round, have a ton of brass and bullets, and have had good success with a lighter load at 600.

In short, yes it can. However a Custom Mauser can be like a Trophy Wife or Mistress. You get all excited and the next thing you know your bank account is empty and you really have nothing to show for it. Return on investment on custom Mausers are usually in the negative. Even if its a 1950's variant it will take some work.

On a positive note, you get to build a rifle to your exact spec, and pretty much any smith can work on a Mauser. There is just so much work that must be done to them, and in the end they still can be sloppy.

If you are looking at entry level, check out the Remington SPS Long Range in 30-06. There are a few threads that cover this rifle. You can buy it and then swap out to a HS precision or B&C take-off stock from a Sendero.
