I was just informed today that my receiver got completely junked while it was being trued. The builder is making it right and my new receiver will be to him Wednesday, for that I am thankful. It is nice to see people standing behind their work.

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

That sucks, but stuff happens and at least he's doing the stand-up thing and taking care of you.

If your local FFL charges you anything for the 4473/transfer (new "firearm"/receiver, so you'll have new paperwork to complete/BG check) make sure that the Smith pays for that too since he could have shipped the rifle to you otherwise.

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

The smith ordered the receiver for me immediately after the incident. At least no chunks of metal went flying. This does hurt my spirits though because this build was started in December.

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

I don't get the point of posting pics if he is making it right? Sounds like he is a stand up guy and is probably embarrassed as hell already.I've been in the Slab Stone business for over 25yrs and have broken a piece or two by accident.I would be pretty pissed if a customer came to my shop, took pics and posted them while I'm buying another slab and making it right.

Just trying to put it in perspective............

+1 EVERYBODY scraps!

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

I'm interested in seeing the receiver because it's always cool to. I think it's the opposite, by showing that the smith is a stand up guy and owning up to a mistake that he's a good man to deal with, but I'm no gunsmith so I wouldn't know on the opposite end of the spectrum.

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

I think it is okay to post pics of the mangled receiver with the EXPRESS statement that although something happened to cause the damage (mistake, lathe malfunction, etc.)...it was promptly and professionally handled by your smith who owned up to the problem and made everything 100% right by you.

I don't think it is right to trash anyone for making a mistake and promptly correcting it (cause let's face it...we all make 'em including the BMF mistakes we wish we could take back), so if that is the intent of posting pics then skip it.

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

Who cares what it looks like or that it happened? If the smith had said.....sorry i dicked up your reciever so send me another, i could understand. But who gives a shit that it happened if the smith is fixing it?

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

I agree with the rest of the posters. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the guy for someone else to use IF the rifle you get back is a shooter. Sounds like he's being a stand up guy.

You should be too! J.I.M.H.O.

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

Man Pics are a bad Idea..... I'm a machinist/owner and any time I scrap a part or any one else its bad deal (and extremely embarrassing); much less having to see it on the hide would make it 10x worse. Shit happens when your machining and it seems that he's making it right so I would leave it alone. Just my 2 cents - Chaz

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

yep , like everybody else has said , shit happens , you run machines long eoungh your gonna make some scraps , when you working with tolerances to .0003" or less like most good smiths do shit happens very very fast and the slightest wiggle with blow it

+1 Something like that shouldn't even have been posted in the first place.

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

Maybe it should have been, "My 'smith is a stand-up guy and I can't wait to show you the completed project"?

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

no matter what i would keep his name out of the posts. he seems to be stepping up to the plate. pics or no pics, just dont call someone out though who is doing the stand up thing

it doesnt take much to f up a reciever when trueing it. you have a good snith that lived up to it instead of passing it off.

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

I couldn't agree more...why even start this thread??

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

JWV why dont you rename the thread "awesome gunsmith and heres why". Let people know what happened and how he is a stand up guy who took responsibility and got you a new reciever and let you know about the mishap right away.
The way you have worded it sounds like he is incompetant and a loser which does not seem like the case here.... just a thought

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

I am very happy that the builder is being a great guy and was honest and is replacing my receiver. I never said I wasn't thankful. I had the right to be mildly upset at first. But all is taken care of. I will not share anything like in the future. Rest assured.

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

I have a morbid sense of curiosity.

I would love to see pics. Not really interested in knowing the builder......just like o see what can happen.

Just like when guns blow up or bulge a barrel.....just fun to see what can happen.

So I understand you thinking pics would be cool.

Re: Builder junked my receiver in the lathe.

It was a 30-06, (Rem 742 or 760 can't remember) a guy was out hunting, said he took a shot and ended up with the banana barrel. My boss cut the barrel down and re crowned it, and out in the woods the guy went again.
We are not sure what was in the barrel, but suspect mud, or compacted dirt....who knows, either way it was a happy ending.
