A buddy of mine just got a new mill and lathe, he wants to make a suppressor for one of my rifles. I will ether be putting it one a DPMS AR-15 with a 24" .223 varmint barrel or a custom 260AI with a 30" barrel.

Im leaning to suppress the AR-15 but i dont want to have to mess with the gas block.

I have been looking at as many suppressor designs as possible. I plan on haveing each end threaded with removable baffles to eliminate the need to try to weld them in place.

Im just looking for some sudjestions or blueprints from a proven design and some pointer from anyone with some experience with this. Thanks.

Re: Building suppressors

Ya, pretty much what Fast Freddy said.

I built a .30 cal can last year with a stepped bore that I run on my .308, 7WSM, and .223. I used stepped cones, a generous blast chamber. But instead of spacers I welded the stepped cones in place. It's pretty much bomb proof and very effective on all calibers.

Re: Building suppressors

Thats more generous than i was thinking and sounds like a good Idea. Is there any drawbacks from using in both calibers being that the 223 bullet is considerably smaller?

And weather i use it for one caliber or both how much over caliber should the holes in the baffels be?

Center Mass how thick should the baffels and the wall of the suppressor be? I plan on making it out of 4130 stainless I just want to make sure I dont mill too much of the material away and cause saftey issues. Both rifles are large and heavy already but i would like the suppressor to be light as possible, but saftey and accuracy are the most important then sound suppression and lastly size/weight.

Re: Building suppressors

you should notice a nominal difference between the .308 and the .223 if you make one sized for the .308. They essentially both work the same way.

The guys at Silencer Talk have got some GREAT idea's, personally I like the mono core designs. They are a bit more complex to fabricate over standard cones, but I am milling all my parts on a CNC milling machine, so none of that matters to me in the first place.

if you decide to take on the suppressor project, please make sure you do the required ATF paperwork first. making an illegal firearm without approval from ATF first isn't going to end well.

It varys greatly , I submitted 3 form-1's recently , 2 at the same time and the third sever weeks after for a 22lr , the last can submitted (22lr) came back in less than 90 days and the first two are still pending

My last for 4 took about 15 weeks
