I just made some rounds on QL and it shows the 208 amax with a 1.34 length.

then I go into Shooter ballistics app, and that shows it at 1.53...

Sure enough, I measured it and the bullet with the tip is 1.530 and without the red tip, it's 1.401

so it looks like QL is wrong as far as info goes on that bullet.

I'm just shocked because I thought QL was very accurate with this information....

is it calculating something else? even the ogive is .795

I have no idea where it pulled that number out of.

I'm a little upset with that. I didn't care to measure the bullet and made some load dev referencing off the QL data. it's probably all off now...

now that I changed it to the correct 1.53, all my numbers are off by a HUGE margin. my 'optimum' load that was around 58K pressure is now calculated at 64K+ I'm glad I checked this because even the lowest amount I was gonna start with is at 55K

can someone point me in the right direction? should I take all the bullets off and start over? I just made like 50 damn rounds for load testing today. and I only have a hammer style bullet puller, and those break teh amax tips, so I can't use it, i'll have to trash the bullets

it does show that with 1.53 i'd be compressing the load though, and they aren't compressed. if I shake the round, I hear the powder shaking in there. and I'm pretty sure I didn't crunch the powder when I seated the bullets.

I also measured some 175 SMK now, and that is shown at 1.266 and my 175SMKs are around 1.240 (with the uneven tip measured at the longest tip, so there is no way it can be .02 longer)

nobody can comment on this matter?

Looks like I ain't going shooting today then

I use QL as a guide, not the bible. Go shoot your test loads, and watch for pressure signs- sticky bolt lift and shiney spots on the case head. QL should get you close, but there are many variables to effect the exact pressures. What loads are you trying (brass, powder, primer, etc), and I might be able to see where you're at.

I'm using 208 AMAX with Lapua brass (mostly once fired, few are new) H4350 with optimum at 55.9

Highest at 56.3 Lowest at 53.1 GM210M primers

26 inch barrel

"it does show that with 1.53 i'd be compressing the load though, and they aren't compressed."

ive noticed the same thing. My faith in QL is limited.

Re: Bullet length discrepency with QL and measuring

I was building some loads using the 6.5mm 123gr SMK's and couldn't find a design length for the bullet to verify QL so I called Sierra and talked with a "Bulletsmith". He didn't know and didn't care so I measured 20 and averaged the length. Found a bullet that length and seated it to OAL then measured to the ogive.

Re: Bullet length discrepency with QL and measuring

so I shot a few today and the 55.9 grain bullet was 150 over QL prediction (adjusted for the temperature on QL) QL said 2674 and I got 2802.
