I am somewhat comfortable selecting bullets relative to barrel twist rates for 6.5 and 308 bullets. I came upon a Savage bolt gun with a 1 in 9" twist rate. I know that it should shoot 55 to perhaps 69 grain (maybe 75s) bullets quite well, but I am looking for actual experience with different bullet weights in Savage rifles with 1/9 twist rates. I would prefer to use Sierra match kings. This will help me get closer faster. Thanks

Re: Bullet recommendations for Savage LRV 1 / 9" twist

Not always the case. Got a Savage 1/9 that will shoot 80s just fine, at least out to 600, which is as far as I have shot it. Bullets were Sierra 80 SMKs.

Wont know till you try it. also keep in mind that even if the bbl will stabilize it, if on the edge, it may or may not shoot tight.

My factory 12FV .223 barrel (26" 9 twist) shoots the 75gr Hornady HPBT exceptionally well with 24.0gr Varget.

The 75gr A-Max seems to be a toss-up for working well in 9 twist Savage barrels...hope to try some soon.

I can't speak from experience with the savage, but 69s shoot well from my 1/9" CZ 527 Varmint. I'm wanting to try the Berger 70VLD, and maybe the 75VLD to see if its stable.

Re: Bullet recommendations for Savage LRV 1 / 9" twist

i'm running 75gr amax over 24.0gr of benchmark. Stock salvage puts them in at .5-.75 for 5 shots.

I'm going to try backing down to 23.0 and go up from there to find the happy ground of not running high pressures. Pockets loosen up a bit with velocity at 2950-2975fps.

The 75 Amax stabilized from both Savage 9tw rifles that I ran them through in warm weather. When the temp dropped below 65-70F I had to drop back to the 75 BTHP from Hornady.

Both shot exceptionally well, the BTHPs did it all year 'round including conditions that were -1200 DA

my uncle shoots 40 grains in one ragged group with his model 12, mine seems to shoot the 40s better than anything else also but im still testing
