Bullet seating consistency

Re: Bullet seating consistency

i was told to trust the dies as they dont (shouldnt) move, but there are plenty of factors which will affect overall length.

go and measure 10 smks and tell me how close any of them were to the same....my bet would be right around the variance you are seeing in overall cartidge length...?

i know my Vmax loads in my 223 are usually with .002 but my smk load in my 308 is all over the shop.

i put it down to the vmax being balistic tipped, but the hollow points of the 155 palma are never square cut...

Re: Bullet seating consistency

Are you measuring by OAL or by using a Hornady / Stoney Point type of adapter that fits on the ogive of the bullet? Measuring to the total OAL will get you .005 to .010" difference. It's the way the jackets are made. All production projectiles without some kind of point, like plastic or lead that has been formed, are the same way.

Re: Bullet seating consistency

yeah its the bullets.

i have a mico set up, and i still see .006 differences in oal. i have an "acceptable range"

it changes box to box too sometimes..........once i open a new box i measure first ten seated, then seat without worry

Re: Bullet seating consistency

i must have just got a good batch for this work up i just finished 5 minutes ago, 15 palmas, and .003 variance

im seeing how they go when they are .010 off the lands as everyone says that is a sweet spot with rem 700s... we shall see, as these babies are LOOOOOOOONG, goodbye mag loading. hahaha

COAL is 2.970......wooooooooo they look like ballistic missiles, lol

cheers,

jim

Re: Bullet seating consistency

I find it far more beneficial to seat my boolets TWICE.

The first seat is just to get it closed up and "close" about 0.020" long, this is the ZERO setting. With caliper and ogive device attached I measure them and dial on the correction to that boolet and reseat. Rarely do I have to add more and even more rarely do I have to pull one. Just remember to dial back to ZERO before adjusting for the next boolet.

OH seating dies have LOTS of backlash. When returning to zero dial well past and then come back. That way you have the same preload when dialing to your final length. Don't dial backwards on final seat if you overshoot, it screws up the works. Dial back to ZERO and come down again.

Cheers,

Doc
