Hey guys I'm in need of some help. I just got all my stuff to measure my cartridges to the ogive rather than the overall length. So I did the procedure to find out where the lands are on my rem 700 in. 308.

It turns out the lands are 3.362" when measuring from the ogive using 168 gr sierra mk's. So I set my seater back .02" and seated my first bullet. It chambers in my gun but looks like the bullet is way out there. So I have a couple questions, is the bullet seated out too far and how far do you seat from the
lands. The two shells I have taken a photo of,the shorter one is set to factory overall length. The other is seated .02" from the lands

" looks like the bullet is way out there. So I have a couple questions, is the bullet seated out too far"

If it's seated deep enough to not be dislodged by handling it's deep enough.

"and how far do you seat from the lands."

I like to start about .020" off the lands, develop the charge and then back out in steps of 5 thou until accuracy peaks. That's almost always from 30 thou off to as much as 4 times that.

Re: bullet seating question

The overall length as stated in the loading manuals should give you flawless feeding from a magazine. For slow fire single loading you can continue to do what you are doing. Most competition shooters load their long range slow fire ammo just as you are doing.

Re: bullet seating question

The simple question is "Does the long one fit in the magazine?" If the answer is yes, proceed on merrily and enjoy, tweek the length to max accuracy. If not, seat it to maximum length that will operate w/o issue and adjust the powder charge to max effect.

Cheers,
