Just finished putting together an ar for a friend and he bought a burris tac30 set up to put on it.. I have never actually put a bdc reticle like this on an ar myself but enjoyed the thing to no end once I got it sighted!

But.. there is always a but...

the reticle is so heavy that precision shooting becomes a bit of a joke.. especially over 300 yards.. without going to a thousand dollar trijicon what is a similar set up with a not so heavy reticle????

The tac30 was never designed to be a 'precision' scope. You can only expect so much from a 4x red dot type scope.

precision was a bad choice of wording there on my part.. I would like to be able to actually aim at a two liter bottle at 300yrds and be able to see that I am actually on the bottle not just covering it up...

The Tac30/MTAC 1-4s were never intended to be a precision only optic. It provides a very good balance of several aspects across the course. However, you only use the center dot to maybe 200 yards, then you use the smaller BDC holds. I can actually shoot a smaller group at 300 yards than 150 with the Tac30. If speed, or close (inside 100 yards) is not a big deal to you, then you have a lot of options.

While I will be going from the MTAC to the XTRII for my 3Gun rifle, realize that there are 2 reticles. The CQ Mil will be a little better for precision work than the CQ Ballisitc 5.56, which I do not think will be better than the Tac30/MTAC reticle. If you are oriented more towards precision work at a cost below $1K, the XTRII is not for you. Look at the Veracity or MSR scopes from Burris for the AR. Both have high quality glass, BDC reticles and a finer crosshair.

I have the same reticle in my Burris AR-536 and I'm breaking clay pigeons at 500 yards and ringing 9" steels at 600. I never had much faith in bcd's, thought they were gimmicky, but after attaining a 1/2" group at 100 yard sight in, tried the 600 yd hole at the 600 yard steels and no one was more surprised then me to hear that glorious clang. Before that day I would have never even taken a shot over 400 yds with a 223.

Are the dimension for the reticle the same with the 536.. Are the dots of equal moa coverage I guess is what I am asking.. The 536 is 5x and the TAC 30 4x so I am wondering how much difference that equates to..

Ya got me there. I'll have to take a closer look at the TAC 30 again. I work at cabelas gun counter and after a while the features of over 300 scopes start to blur. Most of my guns are wearing wither Leupold or Burris.
