Rifle Scopes Burris?

Anyone like the burris xtr 2 8-40x50? How is it at 1000 yards on 40 looking at a target? And clarity at around 25? I liked the idea of having 40 just to look far off even if it isn't as clear as something that cost 2 or 3 times as much.

I haven't tried that scope in particular....but my experience in general with the XTR II lineup is that the lower magnification scopes in that lineup are better than high-mag scopes.

My other general rule is that I'll almost always take clarity over magnification.

I've used 5-25 XTR II scopes that were nearly unusable at 25x - you had to go down to 16x-18x before the clarity was decent, although they were certainly usable by 20x. So if you're thinking these are going to be decent at 40x, my guess is that they probably won't be great. But I have no experience with this particular model, so that could be wrong.

Most likely when you get into Texas heat the mirage will be really bad with it. I do not see a lot of people with them as I do not think they have the clarity of glass that you would really want on that kind of magnification. Most of the time if you are fighting mirage you will want to back your magnification off a good bit to help combat that.

I have that scope and will shoot it this weekend at our match. 40X - fuzzy but usable, 25X fine. Since I won't be shooting ELD with it, it works for me.

The 4-20x is the sweet spot in the XTRII lineup. The lower mags seem to have even better glass. Most people just like to have 18-20x to shoot groups with for load development, etc. Once you get into the 5-25 the glass quality isn't there to use the top of the mag range. Even with the 4-20 I usually shoot groups on 18x as the image clears up considerably when you back the mag off. The glass on my 4-20 is good enough to spot trace in most conditions, but it isn't as good as the scopes in the next price bracket.
