I have an old Remington 721 in 30-06 that I would like to start shooting for the fun of it from time to time but...it kicks like a mule. Any ideas suggestions for ways to deal with that...apart from getting a bionic shoulder?

you can always mill out a pocket in the stock and forend and epoxy in some lead weight....1-2lbs can really take the sting out.

you can also shoot reduced .30-06 rounds as well.

tbh, i am tempted to buy a slip on limbsaver for my win model 88. fucker kicks.
i do have a pad that i got for my wife and daughter that you wear, so it can work for whatever you're shooting, but not as much cushion as those buttpads.

added weight , muzzel break ,have someone else shoot your gun then there is no recoil you have to deal with , kids the greatest mostly free slave labor ever created . you could also roll a towel and use it on your shoulder and it doubles to wipe sweat in the summer heat dual functions always a nice deal or a travel pillow take a nap rest your head then use it the same way for your gun off your shoulder .

My wife recently inherited her grandmas 722 and I just finished restoring it. It’s a .300 savage so probably not quite as punchy as the 06’ but the decelerator made a big difference.

I bought a PAST recoil shield, the thickest one. I use it for my old military rifles with metal butt's. A 200gr at 2650 fps out of a old 8MM Mauser isn't worth shooting otherwise.

The difference is "HUGE". Plus the motion that normally comes from the shoulder is mitigated somewhat.

I also used it when I shot Vintage Sniper with old authentic rifles in 30-06 and 7.5x55. This made for some fun shooting instead of getting pounded all day.

A good recoil pad really goes a long ways in my experience. Had a Tikka in .338WM with a 2-7 Vx1 on it. Gun weight with empty mag was 7lbs 1oz. Put a pad on it before I ever shot it. Very doable.

Reasonable gun weight for cartridge and a good pad is my recommendation.

Personally don’t care for brakes on hunting rigs but they work obviously. Magnaport is an option that’s not so obnoxious.

Don’t forget mount/ring/scope can all be selected to add weight too.

Nice rifle! I have it's brother in 257 Roberts.

As to the OP's question; what everyone else has said. Fit, pad and weight.
