Buy TR or Upgrade 10/22?

I was looking at purchasing a Savage Mark II TR within the next week. I did get to thinking, though, because I already own a 10/22. The 10/22 is a basic model, with the thin barrel.

I just wanted a consensus on what most of you folks would do. The 10/22 needs everything: barrel, stock, and trigger for it to be a serious competitor, which will probably cost upwards of 5-600.00... I can get the TR for 390.00.

I really like the look of the Savage. I haven't yet been able to hold one (it should be to the store I ordered it from on Monday), but I really like that stock, and my biggest deal is the action itself. Plain and simple, I like bolt action rifles. Additionally, I happen to absolutely love the accutrigger.

Could the 10/22 be as accurate as the TR if it gets the "right stuff"?

Re: Buy TR or Upgrade 10/22?

There's just something satisfying about cycling the bolt while you're target shooting. I feel that the bolt will also aid in more precise & focused shots vs. the temptation of shooting quickly with the semi action.

I went with a TR & have been very pleased with the accuracy & feel of the rifle as well as the money I've invested into it. The accutrigger is an amazing factory trigger with a little tweaking. I feel that a worked over 10/22 will probably be more accurate than my TR but I'd imagine your total investment will be somewhat higher with a 10/22 vs. the TR to get where you want to be.

Bottom line they'll both be great choices, you'll have a blast shooting & tinkering with them!

I'm in the exact same situation and came to the same conclusion. The only thing that would be left of my 10/22 would be the receiver and at a higher cost than a new savage. I'm looking for an fvsr though. Not easy to find. Keep us posted.

Re: Buy TR or Upgrade 10/22?

yeah, I'm leaning toward the Savage. I guess the 10/22 can be a piece by piece deal...a barrel here, a stock there, a trigger group over here...the Savage will be my one-shot deal.

Re: Buy TR or Upgrade 10/22?

The savage is a wooden stock that is painted and needs new bottom metal, which isnt to expensive. The rifles feel nice, look good and I like the trigger. I sold my barrel and stock off my 10/22 putting it back to stock when I purchased mine trr. As far as how it shoots I will have to wait until mine comes back from savage to see

Re: Buy TR or Upgrade 10/22?

I too was recently looking for a rimfire trainer, in my case something that would replicate my Savage 10FP.

I bought an FV-SR during Bud's New Years Eve sale and slapped an unfinished Tacticool with DIP bottom metal/trigger guard on it.

Rifle was ~ $220 including transfer
Stock ended up being ~$75
DIP stuff was ~55

Only shot it at 25 yards so far, but it seems to love Winchester Dynapoint GT and CCI SV.

Re: Buy TR or Upgrade 10/22?

I have a TR and a 10/22 both have money sunk into them. The TR was bought from S&S with all of his upgrades. I finally shot it, this being my first bolt repeater it's definitely alot different than just pulling the trigger on the 10/22. The 10/22 has a Kidd barrel and tuned bolt and trigger and is very accurate. The one time I had the TR out it shows great promise with Wolf match. I'm also going to put a Manners T4 on it.

Re: Buy TR or Upgrade 10/22?

I bought the TR. It fits nicely into my plan for training with inexpensive ammunition which skills I can later transfer to its bigger cousin in the GAP .308 bolt rifle. Like that the Savage is pretty accurate out of the box and just added a DIP 20 MOA base to mount the optics. I am still going to add the DIP bottom metal to complete the rifle but am happy with it so far. Good luck in your decision...JaxOps

Re: Buy TR or Upgrade 10/22?

I would go with the Savage.

I put a bunch of money into my 10/22, and it's still a 10/22. The trigger still isn't as good as the accu trigger, and it's not as enjoyable to shoot as a 22 bolt gun.

Re: Buy TR or Upgrade 10/22?

thanks, fellas. The damn store keeps telling me "it'll be here tomorrow..." I just want to hold the rifle to make sure I like the feel of it. There is a gentleman selling a nice Mark II on the classifieds here; it has the Boyd's Target stock, DIP metal top and bottom...a really nice rig. It is tempting, but I just like that stock the stock and bolt from the Savage factory.

I keep reading about how CZ 452's have a "real action" (I guess this means it is a normal-sized action, just calibered down to .22lr?). For those of you with the TR, does it feel like a normal rifle, or does it have that scaled-down feel that some .22's maintain? I believe the bolt/action are a smaller size than the centerfire's, but I am not certain. Thanks again all.
