I need your advice/opinion on buying a trued barreled action. The Gentleman I'm buying barreled action from doesn't know who did the work or specs . Is buying it a good idea not knowing who did the work ? Might be a dumb question but could I send it to LRI and have it trued again ? Thanks for your help and advice in advance.

Is there something about this item that makes it worthwhile despite the unknown provenience? So many of these deals around from reputable smiths, why roll rhe dice on that one?

Speaking of LRI, you ever seen their barreled action group buy? You could do it right, from the start. Very reasonably priced, and quick turnaround.

Truing a rifle action ensures the receiver face, threads, lugs, bolt lugs and bolt face are square to the center line of the receiver. So no, if it was already done then you dont have it done again. If you plan to shoot the barreled action that you are looking at buying then buy it and shoot it. If you are buying it to just rebarrel it then the smith you send it to will be able to tell if it was trued. He will then just thread, chamber and install a new barrel.

My buddy's first LR/precision rifle was a local buy from unknown smith. It shot good for a bit then just wouldn't group. Needless to say, he spent several wasted outings trying to diagnose the issue. Barrel channel wasnt opened enough and bedding was messy and cracking apart. He ended up spending $250 for PCR to bed it right.

Over a dozen GAP rifles new and used and never an issue.

You're only buying the barreled action, and the chance of issues even with a big name smith exist ... but just lower rate. Also doesn't mean a no-name smith build will have issues.

Was in a very similar situation a little while back. Went into a local shop 3 days after purchasing a 204 as my new varmint rifle I saw a rifle sitting on the shelf. A Remington 700 vls stock, apparently blue printed action, bolt fluted, custom barrel Chambered in 20 tac. At the time the best they could narrow it down two was 1 of two local smiths, who's reputation was outstanding, and barrel to be krieger or bartlein as that's what they both ran 99% of the time. But wasn't a guarantee. Well the deal was two good so I took a chance. Well the gun shoots amazing! .2-.3's no peoblem! I had 1 issue with the extractor breaking but that was it. One of the best purchases I've made. As long as the deal is good it's not a bad thing to take a risk. If it's not a deal at all then it's probably something I'd stay clear on.
