I currently have a semi auto 308 and I want to have a bolt action built to both hunt (to 300 yards) and shoot steel out to 800 yards that is flatter shooting and has more energy than the 308. I was thinking maybe a 6.5x284 or 7mm stw and was curious if any one out there owned either and what your thoughts were on these two choices or should I look at a different caliber? Thanks for any input or comment.

Re: Caliber options

I would say the 6.5x284, the STW would be way overkill for hunting out to 300, and steel out to 800.

But I guess you did not say what you are hunting, so maybe not.

Why did you only pick these two calibers? There are plenty in between that will fit your needs.

Re: Caliber options

Any caliber is a option. Those were just two that I was told to look at as options that were supposed to be better than a 308. As far as hunting just Whitetail deer. I am trying to get into the long range shooting and I'm not familiar with the vast caliber options.
