I currently have the following rifles:

- Custom Rem 700 300 win mag being built
- Rem 700 5R 223
- Rem Model 7 6mm - stock as of right now

I am in the market for another rifle (either stock to customize later or custom if can find the right deal). I was curious as to what caliber you all would recommend or look for given the list of rifles I currently own and based upon the info below. If you have a make/model in mind please mention that as well.

A little info:
- I mainly hunt or shoot for fun.
- Don't really have access to shot extreme long distance (500 yds max).
- Need to keep it affordable. Maybe $1,000 or less for rifle. Preferrably less

- Thinking of something maybe in the mid range based upon what I have. For example, 308, 7mm-08, etc.

Thanks a bunch.

Re: Caliber recommendation

I vote 7mm-08. Great sweet spot ballistically. Heavier and more versitile than 243. Does everything a 308 will do with slightly less wind drift and drop. If the dicks sale doesn't work pout look hard at the Tikka offerings. Great out of the box rifles.

+1 on the tikka

the .260 rules but you won't find one in a 700 at Dicks unless it's a trade in. Go with 7mm-08; flatter than a .308; plenty of factory ammo, and even sweeter if you reload.

Dicks has a heavy barreled 7mm-08?

Remington 700 SPS Varmint. They quit making them. But since the first run they sold out so fast, they decided to make more of them. A kind of a here/there thing. But, they go fast when they hit the market.

Re: Caliber recommendation

The ones that Dicks sell are the ADL varmint. They do not have a floor plate. They have a blind box mag in a mossy oak stock made just for Dicks. The only cals I have seen is 223,22-250,243,308 I had the 22-250. The SPS come in 17FB to 308.

Re: Caliber recommendation

+1 on 7mm-08 for meeting your listed needs, though everything else listed will work as well. Just really like bullet selection on 7mm + factory ammo + plenty effective at hunting almost anything in your range requirement.

Re: Caliber recommendation

do you reload? if not then the .308 would be a good choice. if you reload then the .260 would be nice as well. 500 on in i would even consider a 30-06 because i love that caliber for hunting
