I have a Stiller TAC 30 with a fluted bolt. Can I polish the bolt without any ill effects? The black oxide coating sucks on it. I wanted to redo it with KG 1600 and then polish the bolt body leaving the flutes, lugs and bolt handle black. Any advice? Can I lightly bead blast it if I tape over the mating surfaces?

Re: Can I polish my bolt???

sawman556,

I polish Remington bolt bodies all the time with 400 grit and finish with 600 if you want a mirror finish. I also blast with 120 grit aluminum oxide for Cerakote application. I don't know why you can't do the same with a Stiller bolt.

Regards, Paul.

sawman556,

I use about 50-75 psi. with 120 grit aluminum oxide. Have fun.

I used KG Gun Kote 1600. It only comes in flat black and has some high load PTFE or whatever. It seems to work good on a Glock barrel I did. Time will tell with the bolt. I'll probably start playing with Cerakote in the fall. I want to build a oven for my shop first. My wife doesn't mind me using her oven but it's a PITA and too small. I barely got my 20" barreled action in there. And the kids think I'm nuts.
