This may be a very daft question but, im new to loading for the .308, so new infact that i dont have one yet.

Im starting to get my bits together, i can get myself some very cheap new Lapua brass for well under half of the MidwayUK list price.

Its listed as 7.62x39, Is it possible to use 7.62x39 in a .308

Thanks For your help

Unless you know and understand what cartridge will and will not work, I suggest you NEVER fire a cartridge of a different caliber in a gun of any kind other than what it was designed for.

Yep you need to get a good reloading manual. Then look up both the 308 and the 7.62X39 and you'll see what and why everyone is saying they are not interchangeable,

Varmi,
Take no offense to this, you say you are new to reloading, I like others think you need a manual but you also need books on reloading.Old reloading book are cheap and have a lot of usefull information! You realy need to understand that every cal. has it owns specs and that is one of the basic things you need to know. I have been reloading for 35 years, and I have seen guys that thought they knew everything blow up some real nice guns!!
Please take the time to know what you are doing, before you kill yourself or someone else.

If you're new to reloading don't try to get creative, it's a recipe for disaster. Doing it by the book can be dangerous enough if you're not careful.

I imagine the "surprise" would be at least as great as that experienced by M1 Garand shooters who were issued .308 Match ammo and fired it in a .30-06 chamber. AFAIK, no one was ever injured, but they were awfully puzzled by the cartridge neck disappearing.

I knew an old hunter that used 9mm Parabellum cases in his .375. Filled them with lead (he had a mould block opened to hold and fill/point them) and loaded them as bullets. They are close enough to .375 to work at short ranges.

I have a couple of boxes of Lapua factory loaded 7.62X39 around somewhere. I can't bring myself to shoot it in a SKS!

Darwin awaits...

I honestly don't understand that someone will actually consider reloading and playing with weapons without basic grasp of WTF firearms are...

I think you should get yourself an air rifle and start from the start....don't even CONSIDER playing with anything until you know what 7,62 means and 39 means and .308 is...then when you do know that go somewhere and see it in real life (you know pickup up AN EMPTY gun see where what goes and what does what) and after some serious supervision squeeze a round or two...

PS: Or is it an troll having fun yanking us....
