You gotta hit it first!!!!!

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

Depends on the thickness of your plate I guess.....I've hit some that are thin they ring like a freaking church bell....other make a dull thud that's barely heard.....

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

Dont know what kind of steel you are shooting but you should certainly be able to hear it at 400 and I would hope see it if you are actually hitting it.

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

OK, enough. Sure I hit it. I was just kidding (and so was he).
It's pretty obvious you're not going to hear it go bong if you don't HIT IT! Please!

It is a 10" plate of 3/8ths AR500 type steel (doesnt dent at all with a 308 hit, I can tell you that).

Yes, I should have heard a hit maybe a second or two after firing, right? Bullet goes 3000'/sec so it went the 400 yards in about 1/3 sec. Sound goes 1000'/sec so it takes like 1.2 sec to go 1200'. So 1.5 sec delay I figure.

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

If your at a public range then more than likely you “will not hear” it all.. I shoot steel at 200-600 yards at a local range, but when I’m not the only person on the line, I really cant hear them hit.. But I always see them hit or miss.. LOL so I’m good to go…

If you out in back 40 with no other background sounds than yes, you should defiantly be able to hear it with ears on..

Yup...even at 1250 yards. The two factors that seem to make the most difference are the wind and where you hit the plate. When the wind is blowing strong, it has a tendency to mask long range plate hits. Also, if you hit the plate close to its anchor point, it will not ring and therefore carry further. Hitting the near the top and hitting hear the base make two vary different sounds, I've noticed, and the former tends to carry much further. In fact, I often confuse the latter with a miss.

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

I've also noticed material will affect this. I have a friend that has a plate (unknown material) that is the exact dimension as mine, and it sounds like a church bell when hit. A LOT louder than mine at the same distance and load.

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

My AR500 tgt let's off a nice Booonggg when hit. I can hear it with plugs in past 1000 yards.

I have it suspended on chain, so the vibration probably isn't dampened as fast as a fixed target.

I've noted that softer steel targets sound more like a "thwack", when hit.

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

Today I could hear a 36" gong at 1801 yards, about 3 seconds after I shot I'd see the plate blister and respond then about 7 seconds? a resonating deep gong tone,, perfectly satisfying, better confirmation than the visual... shot 1235, 1720 and 1801, got a 1st round hit today, sorry to digress.

Thats some impressive shooting bud. Good on you. What caliber you using at those ranges?

LMAO. Yes, I can hear the hit even with ear protection on. Once it gets pass 800 yards, depending on the wind direction and such it may be a bit difficult to hear.

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

How far are you shooting (This is an 'inverse square law' where the sound level will decline by 6dB for each doubling of distance.
)?

What caliber are you shooting (size and speed matter)?

What are you using for hearing protection?

If you are doing it right you are more likely to see the impact and then hear it. The sound becomes a secondary confirmation.

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

1,500 is the furthest I've heard it on my AR500 plate steel, but if the wind gets even a bit breezy across the range at those disances it seems to prevent me from hearing much beyond 1,000.

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

We shot last sunday at some new targets that we built. One is a 10" head shot design on a steel frame. It is solid but is clearly heard at 800 yards with .308 and ear muffs. The sound is more of a thump/wack, and not the satisfying bell ring. The other targets are hanging dingers and they do make a much louder ringing tone.

The fun one is a 36" gong type target that hangs on a large steel frame. It makes a sustained ringing tone that is clear over the 1,000 yards we had is set up at. We were able to hear it with our AR's in .223 also. A spectator drove up and said he thought we had missed our target, but several seconds later heard the gong! It was funny. The general public don't realize what is possible.

We also have a 200 yard dinger that is designed to simulate the aiming black on a 200 service rifle target. It hangs by chain, but makes a solid thump. Could be the high velocity at that distance or the lighter .223 rounds.

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

I was shooting @ 500 last weekend at 12" x 12" 3/8 AR500 hanging from chain and had no problems hearing the smack, plus the target swings pretty good to even further confirm a hit.

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

The ambient noise around the shooters location is the most important factor in how far you can hear hits on steel. I've shot at a standard NRA "Javalina" silhouette target at 1500 yards with a 7mm STW and 180 Bergers. There's penty of time to take off the hearing protection before the sound comes back. If the wind is over about 10 MPH the wind noise masks the sound, but in a light wind (under 5 mph) the clank is easy to hear. My target's aren't swingers, just on a pair of 1/2" steel rods poked in the ground.

Getting on target however is not easy without a downrange spotter.

Re: Can you hear your plate go bong

I have 1/2" AR500 in 6", 8", 10" and 12" circles that hang from chains that I shoot at with a .308. I can hear hits out to 600yds with hearing protection.( that is the max of the range). Not a ring though. The the splash and swinging of the target confirms a hit more than the sound. Although the audible is a nice touch.
