Gunsmithing Can you shorten a contoured barrel?

I have a GAP 308 with a 26" Mike Rock contoured barrel and was wondering if it can be shortened? I love the rifle and it is a tack driver but 26" is so long for a 308 imho and not that i got my tax stamp back for my AAC Cyclone it would be even longer with it on, lol. So the question is can a contoured barrel be shortened and threaded or would i have to re-barrel? Thansk.

i think what you mean by "contoured" is "fluted". yes, you can have it shortened but it will look goofy. it is up to you to decide if it that is a big deal to you or not.

I would just buy another barrel if you could afford it (I know you can) and have two. A shorter one might no do like you want and then you cant go back IF you cut it down. I have two barrels for my light gun and love it. Just a thought. And if you do try to have the same smith do it with the same reamer so you should be able to use the same components(dies and seater and possibly brass If you reload ) set the same for each bbl. All you would need is an action wrench and a barrel vice Less than $100.

PM Motana Marine, he cut his 700 Police incrementally down to 20-inch with good results. Flutes may not be pretty.

I would cut it.

I think with the can or the brake on there it will keep the muzzle from looking weird.
