i have been wanting a .308 for over a year now. i have always wanted a savage 10fcp in an a5, but i feel like it would be smarter for me to get a r700 sps tac instead. why? because ill be out half as much money at first, its a shorter more compact gun (id like to hunt with it) and remingtons bolt feels a little smoother than the savages. i figure if i dont lose interest in this hobby i can still get a mcm stock later on as i get the money and stuff. i would hate to spend a grand right off the bat on a 10fcp and then lose interest if that makes sense. should i get go ahead and get the r700? thanks for any ideas.

I have a Remmy R5 and a DPMS LR308. Love both and say either is a good choice. My sone has a savage but it a cheaper one but it's a 270 win. You get what you pay for in glass and guns. My 2 cents.

Re: cant decide, any help?

the sps tact is a great shooter out of the box. You would be correct. The 10FCP is not leaps and bounds ahead of the SPS in the accuracy dept. I had an sps and it shot great, it was bedded in a A5 for sometime and was a great gun. Id buy the SPS T over the Savage any day

Re: cant decide, any help?

I've got the 10fcp McM as much as I'd love to have a custom rifle every time I shoot my savage it just continues to amaze me. I cut mine back to 20" and couldn't be happier. I've got plans to get the CDi bottom metal that accepts AI AW mags for it.

Mine shoots sub MOA with PMC 165gr TSX hunting loads and WAY sub MOA with good match ammo.

out of the box savage actions aren't as smooth as others but with some use they get better.

the biggest con I can think of with a savage is the resell.

Re: cant decide, any help?

i noticed savage in the a5 was $600 more than the base savage was. i went with the HS stock on mine as i liked it and it was $300 less than the McMillan furniture. had it been the a4, i may have gotten it. people say the bolt feels that way because its a floating head design. mine is smooth, but feels loose or wobbly when not cocked. i dont know what a remy would cost so i cant say if you can find one cheaper than the savage. but if savage adds $600 for the a5 stock, how much would getting the remy with that stock cost? and buying it after and swapping would be how much? its alot to think about. oh and they do offer a model with the 20" barrel, that 24" would be hell to carry on a long hunt. as for resale, hopefully you will get a rifle you like froom the start and never have to worry about the resale. also make sure to look in the for sale area here on the site. nice stuff in there

luvman, since you have a detachable mag already, have you ever thought about just getting the mag extensions that SSS offers to increase the capacity to 9 rounds? i wanted bottom metal as soon as i saw it, but after looking at the cost plus the inletting plus the mag costs... well the 9 round sounds a little easier on the wallet

I feel or you jackh. The truth is either one of them will serve you well. What you should probably do is go with the one that you initially wanted from the beginning. Sometimes the more you think about it, the harder it gets.

I've thought about it, but I like the AI mags. If my factory mag isn't loaded with care the rounds will hang up. AI mags have a reputation of being reliable.

Re: cant decide, any help?

well honestly i think i wanted the savage from the get go because i had read its so good out of the box, its made in the US and its a little less common than remingtons, no offense to remmy guys but i feel like everyone and their mom has a rem 700 and it may be for a good reason idk. im just big on smooth bolts on rifles and i kinda like the feel of the sps more than the 10fp. also the sps t is already at 20" so i dont have to cut it.

later on if i still want to put it in a mcm or manners stock i can do so. this is going to be a hunting rifle first and target rifle second so im not sure if the mcm a5 is the best choice for me right now anyways.

whats the deal with the r5? better than the sps t? i see its quite a bit more money...

Re: cant decide, any help?

ok does anyone know the difference in the sps tactical and sps varmint? is it just barrel length? i cant find an sps tactical anywhere around and the soonest i can get one in the mail is like 3 wks. i might could settle for the varmint if i since i can get it now ya know

Re: cant decide, any help?

different barrel different stock.

The SPS tactical stock isnt all that great, I pitched it the day after I got it (not sure I would have kept the one on the varmit either to be honest).

Re: cant decide, any help?

oh ya they have different stocks too, forgot about that. ya im not worried about the stocks, a replacement would definitely be in order in the future. so other than that its just barrel length right?

Re: cant decide, any help?

went to a really good gun store today. the guy behind the counter has nearly sold me on an FN TSR XP in .308. i know its twice as much but dollar for dollar he says it cant really be beat. its light and is a good hunting platform for me while i save up for a better stock and glass later on. any input on this? i really like the claw extractor and built in dbm. everything is like cold forged or something so the metal is denser and stiffer. recessed crown is a plus too. damnit i was sold on a 700 now im about to spend twice as much...
