I have a maximum range of 400-500 yards with a 300 win mag. 208 seems heavy for that distance, but i don't know for sure. I've shot 150 gr nosler ballistic tips since i've had the gun and they have served me well, but i am about to load up another 200 rounds or so and was maybe looking at doing something a little different as I am really getting into shooting for accuracy.

any suggestions?

Re: can't decide on bullet

1. Be sure the barrel twist is fast enough to stabilize the bullet you wish to shoot.

2. For long range you should pick a bullet you get excellent accuracy with in your gun.

3. Look at ballistic tables/drop charts. That should give you an idea of optimal drop/retained velocity at various ranges with bullets of different ballistic coeficients.

For a 300 Win. Mag. I would think a bullet in the 190 to 210 grain range would be the best for long range if accuracy was acceptable. My choice is the 200 gr. Nosler Accubond in my 1:10 twist barrel.

Re: can't decide on bullet

Have you looked at the Berger 185grainers? They impress me a lot with their relatively high BC's (high 0.50's G1) and out of your 300 WM, they will fly FAST. I would imagine their 185 LR-BT will be super accurate as well (wouldn't hunt w/ it however).

Re: can't decide on bullet

Look at the 178 BTHP from Hornady also. A .530 BC and very accurate in my .308.

Re: can't decide on bullet

400-500 yards is the limit at your range? The rifle can certainly shoot farther. 208 Amax is a great performer for the money these days. How heavy is too heavy for a given range?

Re: can't decide on bullet

i wanna say the twist rate is 1 in 10 but it could be 1 in 12, the barrel doesnt say. Its an old remington 700 bdl. and yes i know the gun can shoot way beyond those ranges, but unfortunately, my longest shot where i go shooting is only 500 yards. and I also wanted a bullet that i can hunt with. The hornadys are really nice, and I have pretty much decided on them, but i just wanted some input on the weight of the bullet. I know the 208's are great for long range, but for my range, I did not know if they were unnecessarily heavy or not. My hunting shots I take are usually at a max of 300 yards.

Re: can't decide on bullet

It's easy to check the twist:

1. Insert a cleaning rod from the muzzle with a patch on it.

2. Put some masking tape on the cleaning rod at the muzzle and mark it so you know when the rod has made a complete revolution.

3. Pull the cleaning rod out of the barrel until the cleaning rod has made a complete revolution.

4. Measure the distance between the tape that was at the muzzle and the point at which a complete revolution of the rod was made. That distance is the twist and my bet is that it's 10 inches.

Re: can't decide on bullet

1-10=GTG for that bullet
1-12=probably not

if it's 1-10 then you can use almost anything, but not completely. at that range a 208 would hit harrrddd! I'd say a 175 to 210 range would probably work well.

if it's 1-12 then you'll proably have to limit to 180 or quite possibly less. My 308 is 1-10 and it really doesn't like 180gr, but I haven't tried buy 1 type.
