Well Long story short, I ordered a RRA 20 Varmint with all the goodies about 3 months ago. The gun store told me 5 - 8 weeks which I knew was on the short side of the scale because the website said 60 - 90 days. Well the other day (after 3 weeks of trying), I finally got ahold of someone over at RRA and they told me I was lookiing at another 90 DAYS! I am not satified with this and am looking to possibly change my platform. Mostly because of my impatience and insatisfaction with RRA.

So here is my dilema, Im looking to step up in quality also, ive been looking into POF, GAP, Larue, Noveske, LMT, AR Variants and have no idea what is the best value. The purpose of this rifle is going to be a little of everything from casual shooting, hunting, and I would like to get into some longer distance shooting( havent done much to speak of).

I know im going to get the typical "DO A SEARCH", and I am, But thought maybe you guys could offer some first hand expiriance. Right now , I blelieve the rifle will be paired up to a viperPST 2.5-10( Unless you guys think there is a better option.

I know there is a substantial price difference between what i originally ordered, But if there is a substantial jump in quality, and Customer service, I will gladly pay the extra $$$

Re: Cant Decide which 308AR Variant

I am having one built locally by an amazing gunsmith, so I can relate to the wait.

That said, I did see yesterday that Lowlight shot the GAP one and his second group was < 3/8". That's impressive.

Re: Cant Decide which 308AR Variant

It is hard to go wrong with a custom build like that offered by GAP in their new GAP-10! You get a first-class, highly accurate and reliable rifle built to how you want it (in terms of barrel length, stock, finish, etc.). It also offers arguably the best value for money of all the options you listed since you can get it pretty decked out/loaded for well under $3k.

Re: Cant Decide which 308AR Variant

Im not limited to those options... its just what popped into my head when I was typing... if you have another option, my ears are open.

Isnt the GAP-10 based on armalites design, does that mean i have to use armalite mags?

Not even close...it is based on the POF P-308 receiver which uses DPMS/KAC pattern magazines (DPMS, KAC, C-Products, Magpul mags).

Based on that comment and "what just popped into [your] head"...have you done any research into the platforms you are considering? You really owe it to yoruself to first...figure out what, specifically, you want/need from the rifle! Then, once you have that in mind, review some of the multitude of threads here on the Hide and elsewhere on each platform. There are numerous "this vs. that" threads floating around on all of the platforms you have rattled off and each one has a unique set of ups/downs.

Re: Cant Decide which 308AR Variant

Salt Lake City is home to plenty of gun enthusiasts. Find someone with some tools and build your own.

Now, if you want a factory rifle and are willing to spend some bucks my picks would be LMT 16" CL, POF 16 or 20", and GAP.

Out of all those the POF will be the easiest to find RIGHT NOW. The others will mean shopping around (LMT) or waiting 2-3 months (GAP).

edit: The RRA's are nice rifles, if you can find one in stock. I understand the frustration with inconsistent wait times, it reminds me of the scene in The Money Pit where the contractor tells him the job will take "two weeks".

Re: Cant Decide which 308AR Variant

The last time I was in Doug's on Redwood road he had a RRA 20" Heavy barrel in .308 in stock for $1,000.00. "Get Some" on State Street had a POF in stock and Gunnies in Orem had a rack full but I did not look close to see what they were. Take a day and look around. Cabela's carries DMPS and I think Armalite and Gallinson's had some DMPS in stock. I would not want to carry the RRA hunting.

I'm very happy with the LMT MWS I got off Gunbroker.

I actually Ordered my RRA through Dougs... Sofar ive been kinda concerned with them and im starting to wonder if they just forgot my order or something... First gun i orderd was the RRA Lar-8 and we all know that fiasco. then i ordered some night sights for a Kahr MK( and was told two weeks and now im looking at 6 weeks. Im wondering if itwas RRA this time or Dougsfault( forgetting to order). On top of that they lost a gun I had there on lay away and took them a day to find it. im starting to get concerned witht he service at dougs... Ill have to check out get some and the other shops you mentioned

I ordered my RRA 24" Varminter in 5.56 through Doug's and was quoted 30 days and it turned into 60 days before I got it. I don't know if it was them or RRA. If you haven't been to Gunnies in orem in awhile you'll be pleasantly surprised at their stock levels. Get Some has quite a bit but their prices seem a little high. Good luck

Re: Cant Decide which 308AR Variant

Another vote for the LMT. I mounted a SS 3-9 in a Bobro mount and stuck it on the rifle for a range trip last weekend. New scope, new mount, first time on the rifle. Get to the range to zero, fire the first shot, dead on, as in the hole was quartered by the crosshairs. Fired two more, three leaf clover. First time I ever had a setup zeroed without touching a turret. Lots of luck, but I tend to think some good machining had a bit to do with it, too. If you get an LMT, get a Battlecomp BABC for it. I also added a UBR and one of Slash's extra heavy buffers. Set up like this, and shooting off my pack, recoil is so minimal that the crasshairs hardly move. I have a new favorite.
