How much does the buffer effect operation.

Say for instance you have an 18" or longer barreled upper and you put it on a lower with a carbine length buffer like a UBR for instance. Would it effect operation?

I've seen rifles with both I'm just wondering if the gas system has to be tuned differently for each.

Generally speaking it doesnt affect operation.

As long as youre using the right buffer (rifle buffer with a rifle spring and carbine buffer for a carbine spring) it should be fine.

Re: Carbine buffer vs. Rifle buffer?

I currently have a UBR on my 18" MK12. I'm running a H2 buffer in it with a Tubbs CS flat spring and it runs great. I prefer to slow down the cyclic rate on it, and a standard carbine buffer was a noticeably quicker recoil pulse.

You don't have to tweak the gas system, just the weight of the buffer to get what you like. In my case with a fixed gas block it isn't even an option, so I did a trial and error to figure out what I liked.

I have a UBR with a Spike's ST-T2 buffer and standard carbine spring on my 20" HBAR. I wasn't sure if it would work, but so far so good. Feels great, no function issues in 400 or so rounds. If you're really concerned, try VLTOR's A5 system, it gets good marks.
