Gunsmithing Carbon barrels in barrel vise?

Never really thought about it until now and I’m sure there’s an easy answer but I don’t wanna do anything before having that answer.

Removing a proof carbon barrel from an action... any special care with these barrels? Wasn’t sure if I could clamp down on the carbon section or if I needed to keep mostly on the steel shank closest to action.

I would use as much of the steel section as possible. A friend just had SAC chamber a switch barrel setup with two proof barrels and they didn't think it would be any issue using their barrel vice.

You need to clamp on the exposed steel on the breech end. When holding it in the usual way the steel core will flex and break the bond between the CF and the steel.

How about in a lathe Dave? I run a heavy 10 and am about to build a 300 prc for a She rifle for a buddy of mine. I run brass tipped screws in an outboard spider for through the headstock work. I had planned to wrap the barrel in some brass shim stock.

I'm assuming you have a spider on the inboard side as well. If that's the case it shouldn't be a problem as long as you clamp on the steel. Come to think of it if you can chuck the barrel up in a lathe it would work great as a make shift barrel vise.

I would stay off the carbon even in your lathe if possible. a work around is to make sleeve for your spider screws to push into. split copper pipe works or pvc. take not when indicating the barrel as it will take very little force to flex/bend the blank.
