I know this is not exactly a typical setup for the hide but I am looking to have a little custom work done on a Ruger #1. Specifically, I would like trigger work, accurizing, rechambering and a new barrel. This will be a dedicated deer rifle for short to medium (out to 400ish yards) shooting. It appears that Carolina Precision Rifles has the expertise to perform this work but I was wondering if anyone here has experience with them and/or a Ruger #1.

rugers are well.... rugers. I own a #1 and love the hell out of it, but a tack driver it is not, a 400 yard gun... well only If I'm shooting at propane tanks =]

If you think your going to hunt at 800 yards save your money and buy a remington SPS, get a used McMillan stock (most people sell them here for about half retail after they upgrade to a AICS or some other high end chassis) and go from there.

Too many flexible joints and barrel attachments. Some will shoot. Most are as aggiesig said...deer at 300 yards are it. Tried it. Tried it. Tried it. Done been cured. No long range records are set with Number Ones. Lots of folks love them. They don't win matches. For what it is worth...shooting a live animal at 800 yards...you need a REAL rifle. I hate to think of all the wounded you might leave with that piece. If you hit it at all. That is my experience. Take it or leave it. FNP

Ok, let me revamp my goals slightly and look to shoot out to 300-400 yards. This should certainly be doable with a worked over gun. In any case, I have other rifles to reach out farther but the original question still stands - references for the work of Carolina Precision Rifles and/or work on #1s.

don't know anything about Carolina Precision.

but you are going to spend a ton of money on your #1 that you will never be satisfied with, and will never recoup in a private sale.

It looks from their site that they just add stuff to the gun new trigger, new stock, bedding material. They aren't doing anything to significantly alter the barrel contact areas which are the problem.

It looks like that smith does some nice cosmetic things, but the rest of it sounds like snake oil to me kinda like this:

potential to work is there, but not a ton of people swearing by it, and not alot of good information.

I'm not trying to hate on the gun, but it is a purpose built instrument, most of it's purpose is cosmetic, the rest is strength (Very Strong). I own one in 25-06 and I will probably shoot a deer with it before the end of the weekend. But don't let a fools idea of whats possible trick you into throwing a bunch of money away.

If you go into the archives of "Rifle" magazine, there is a good article on "accurizing" the No. 1. Specifically it gives hints on freefloating the barrel from the forend and applying a bit of upward pressure from the hanger. You can drill and tap the forward end of the "hanger" for a set screw. Make a small "V" block to go between the hanger and the barrel with a dimple on the hanger side, slide than into place and with the set screw apply upward force on the barrel. This "free-floats" the barrel and gets rid of some of the slop. Apply about a half turn at a time with firing groups in-between. Usually about 2 1/2 turns after contact will find better grouping. A drop of wicking Loc Tite will hold that adjustment. You probably will need to remove the spring from the hanger for the work. Simple tho. JMHO
