Hello shooters, does anyone know if WST or Greendot can be used safely in the 308win. with lyman 311291 cast 170gr. bullet. trying to use it for suppressed fire on hogs. Thanks, Tom

According to Quickload:
Using a 24" barrel, 6.0 grns Greendot would give you 1096fps, fill 22.3% of the case, and yield 11120psi pressure. I know Alliant 2400 performs excellent in extremely reduced charges, but I don't know about Green Dot.
My Quickload does not have WST in it's database.
One alternative is to use Trailboss. 8.0 grns of it will fill 49.2% of the case, give you the same 1096fps, and 12262psi pressure.

thanks for the info, got in a big rush and put 10.0gr greendot and cci 250 primers in 15 cases. havent fired them. does your data tell if they are going to be fatal to me or my gun? it was stupid, I know, thats why I havent fired them. Thanks for your help.

the big issue with very small charges in a large case is the location of the powder. If you have the barrel pointed downward and then bring it up to make a shot (common scenario) then the powder will all be towards the base of the bullet and the primer can have a difficult time igniting the powder, so you may get very odd characteristics (big velocity changes, etc). Or if you have the powder charge near the primer it will light off, but with lots of extra air space in the shell. that's why they developed Trail Boss to make a very lightweight "fluffy" powder that takes up a lot of space but doesn't have a large charge. the only caveat that I have read about using Trail boss is do not compress it!

I've used it on most of the pistol calibers but haven't gotten around to trying any rifle loads with it, but it's easy to use.

Yes on both. I used to be a trailboss kinda guy, but now use nothing but 700X or clays. I shoot a Lyman 311332BV in 308's and 300wm, both subsonic and high speed and have never looked back. Lots of B/S on the net about sub loads and what they will and will not do. Mine fly very well to the target be it at 5 feet or 400 yds plus. Best thing is have a sound understanding of reloading 1st, what happens when the primer fires 2nd and, 3rd start at a higher change weight and keep dropping down until the crack goes away. If your looking for under MOA it can be done, but much harder than high speed stuff for sure, as subs are much less forgiving about many things that a high speed could care less about. The bulk of my loads are 1.5-2moa but I have the good ones just in case I have to dot the eye. Your going to have to learn your glass well and have a lot of up if your going to reach out with them. I use my .308 for everything so it's zeroed for high speed food at 100 w/o the can, my can/s induces 2.5 moa of droop the adding the subs drop adds another 10.5moa. So on a 70*F day it takes 13 moa(lucky number) it get to 100, and to 400yds I'm at 55moa + a 2.5mil hold. A dedicated stick would be better, but for me I prefer to carry different ammo and know where it will land over more sticks. Some Sub loads are much more temp sensitive than others, spend the time to chart them if you at times, only get that one shot.
Caution,.... be very careful about sub only match's as if you catch that bug, it's hard to shed down the line. Very cheap to shoot and will teach you much about reading mother nature, and will up your fieldcraft game as well, should you want to go down that road.
