CED or PACT chrono..

Re: CED or PACT chrono..

I upgraded to a CED M2, I like the simple easy to buttons, so far it has worked great, my only problem is I didn't buy the carry case for it, the box is gettin pretty ragged.

My Pact Model 1 (entry model) is still going strong after 15+ years. I had to take the lenses out of the skyscreen sensors and clean them after a few glitchy sessions but it's now running strong.

I've been thinking about upgrading these past couple years and the CED M2 seems to be the one to get without spending close to a grand on some of the other boutique brands.

I had two friends get the CED M2 back in early '09 and both units gave read errors after only a few visits. Both were sent back and new units were returned, so it seems that they might have had some QC issues at one point.

The PACT Professional seems to be a nice unit as well.

Mines back to working well and it does most of what I need (no printer) so I'm going to hang with it.

Re: CED or PACT chrono..

Had a pact, but it functioned much better after I ran over it with the F150. Now use a CED M2 or a bud's Oehler 35. I would pick one of the latter 2.

Re: CED or PACT chrono..

I really liked the PACT from 1988 or so, but it must have fallen out of the truck, along with the obsolete HP thermal printer we used.

Replaced it with a supposed to be comparable Pro unit that has shot timer built in...and I almost hate it. Seems inconsistent in full sun, even with diffusers AND masking tape blocking any direct sunlight on the newer-model sensors.

Seems to eat batteries.

No print option except springing for another overpriced because it's so rare because it's so obsolete printer. Have a reliable scanner now so I *would* OCR the data into my computer, but...

PACT offers NO upgrade path. I even asked them about putting a data output plug on the board and they said the old versions just won't support ANY output to any computer. And the guy was rude, to boot! I was offering to PAY!

IF their newer stuff works like the simple chrono I used to have, I'd still go with PACT, even though I think they are lazy turds. The feature set appears right, and I just don't like the big box units...or even the smaller folding box of that cheap thing. I started with a CED unit way back.

Oh, and I use 36-inch screen spacing and the stupid thing will NOT remember it. No DIP switches to set it like the "older" unit had (and those were labeled in the instructions incorrectly--general smartness and experimentation made that a non-issue for me). Good thing they don't make that one any more.

So, a qualified nod to the jerks at PACT. If the new is like the older (a single bug, easily and permanently fixed), go for it.
