I'm looking for a bit of info about the applying Cerakote. I'm working on a Savage and want to refinish all the metal. My questions are:

Do parts that are parkerized need to be stripped down to bare metal?

Do parts that are anodized need to be stripped down to bare metal?

I have a sneaking suspicion that parkerizing and anodizing will give the Cerakote something to bite into, but I haven't been able to find any info.

Re: Cerakote applied over...

Cerakote will stick to park very well, anodized surface...it depends on how slick the aluminum is/was before they anodized it, if it feels slick, then I would blast it with aluminum oxide before painting. Either way, make sure you degrease the hell out of it before painting.

Re: Cerakote applied over...

It's better to take the park off, IMO.
The anodizing will depend on what level of hardness was used. At the very least you should rough up the anodizing quite a bit to get maximum adhesion.
The most important part, like everyone else has said, is to properly degrease.
NAPA auto parts braklean is the best stuff that you can get. It comes in a spray can or by the gallon.

Re: Cerakote applied over...

a lot of pistolsmiths put park over bare metal to have something chemically bonded to the metal when the cerakote rubs off from multiple holster presentations. That said I normally blast everything whether it's parked/anodized/gnome jizzed on etc etc
I haven't had any trouble yet
