I am looking for input on cleaning the chamber on my bolt guns. I bought the Sinclair chamber cleaning tool, and I didn't read closely, but it must be for AR's or some specific gun, it is a goat rope trying it in a typical bolt gun--geeeeez!

I have tried using cleaning swabs, and flushing out the chamber area with Powder Blast, does OK I guess, but am just wondering what others do--I'm most curious about how to get at the lug recesses effectiely/properly.

Re: Chamber Cleaning

I use shotgun bore mops to clean my chamber , you can also get chamber specific mops. A couple of patches in a brass loop pulled through a little and then bent back over themself like you do with the otis system will work also.

This, gets the neck area well. For the chamber area.

For the lug area, you want the Sinclair specific took that uses the felts and cotton rolls designed for bolt guns. If you have an AR--keep the one you have for that as it works extremely well for that task.

Mark, 5.56, I don't have an AR--yet, but the tool I got BLOWS for a standard action, i.e. remmy, sako, browning.

I'll look on Sinclairs site again, the felt thing seemed like a good idea for the lug recesses, I can actually get the chamber pretty good with a mop!

Re: Chamber Cleaning

I use combination pistol chamber cleaning rod/brush units, wrapped with large cleaning patches. I like the surplus type with twisted wire shafts and ring loop ends that I find at gun shows. I'd use mops, but they tend to accumulate crud, while patches can be easily replaced. .45 size for .473"-ish base cartridges like .308, .30-'06, .260, .44 Mag, etc. and 9mm size for .222, .223, 7.62x39, etc. Depending on how one wraps the brushes with patches, they can accommodate some minor size discrepancies. If you use a bit of care, they can last along time, mine are probably over a decade old by now.

BTW, good link for the Tipton setup. My difficulty involves finding replacement dental rolls/swabs; thinking that cotton cosmetic cleanup squares, rolled tight, might make a serviceable substitute.
