I've read about setting up a grid of 3.6" ticks at 100 yards and using it to check a reticle or the ranging power in an SFP scope or the tracking on the turrets. Of course that method always comes with the advice to physically measure the distance to make sure it is exactly 100 yards. Even a good rangefinder might not be close enough on.

That got me wondering why not just use smaller increments and measure out at a closer distance? For example, using a 1" grid @ 28 yards would be convenient and easier to physically measure. (I chose that as an example because the actual increment is 1.008"). Or just switch to metric and use 2 cm @ 20 meters, 2.5 cm @ 25 meters or 3 cm @ 30 meters. Those distances seem far enough away to overcome having too fine of an increment.

I am aware, however, that many scopes on their highest power may not allow focusing that close. On an FFP scope, I would just dial the magnification down. But an SFP scope that ranges on 22X might only work at 100 yards or more.
