Changing brakes on a perfectly good OBR?

So I bought one of the original OBR's back in the day. Put a surefire brake on it because I thought back then that surefire was the shit. I never bought the surefire can though.

I am now looking to buy a GAP-10 and am faced with a choice. I would dearly love to put a thunderbeast 30-BA on the new rifle and pull the surefire brake on the OBR and be able to interchange the thunderbeast can between the two rifles. Or, I could buy another surefire brake for the GAP-10 and suck it up and buy what I would consider an overpriced can that (from what I have read from some) isn't up to par with its competitors.

The OBR shoots lights out. I am afraid of putting another brake on it and changing the 'harmony'.

How big of a risk am I taking? Does the OBR need to be 'tuned' with a different brake or is that all a load of crap? Should I just buy the surefire? Certainly that would be the path of least resistance.

Thanks for any advice...

I wouldn't worry about changing out the break. Worst case scenario, IMO, would be having to make a small adjustment to zero (highly unlikely). You're still going to have a light's out shooter. I'm jealous of your toy. Enjoy it...

Re: Changing brakes on a perfectly good OBR?

Don't know where your getting your info but Surefire IMHO is very competitive.

The Surefire are a niche suppressor. They are QD and have repeat POI like no other can I have seen. I have moved 3 Surefire suppressors across my gun in one sitting between 3 or 4 mags and never changed POI.

Are some suppressor more quiet, yes. Is that little bit extra suppression worth the little bit extra length or added weight? That's up to you to decide.

I dont want to turn this into a thread about suppressors, but for those of you who have and like surefire suppressors I would appreciate any feedback. The really easy thing would be to just buy the surefire, so for those of you with strong opinions, lets have em!

+1...

You ever wonder why so many smiths go with the SF brake? It's not because of the cans lack of competitiveness. Don't get me wrong, the TBAC is nice, but so is the SF. In my opinion the SF brake is better than the TBAC brake for their QD model. When it's comes to sound suppression we're talking from what I've read here 2-3 decibel difference which the difference isn't likely to be noticed by a human ear. You're going to hear "SureFire sucks this and sucks that" on any forum because there are always going to be those that can't afford them and those that have never even used one but own a TBAC and want to slam the SF anyways. I'd suggest going to a match where you can look at both cans up close. Somewhere on here Frank did a comparison I believe and he did like the TBAC better but he didn't write off the SF by any means...

Add: The price you see SF for sale is MAP pricing and not always the price you have to pay. They can be found for under $1600 if you're not afraid to ask for the deal.

They can actually be found for around $1300 if you know where to look.

Well spill the beans.. I need a SF338SS... Really the only one i need.. where are these good deals, or where can i find this for such good prices?

Re: Changing brakes on a perfectly good OBR?

I too have an OBR and a sf brake installed. I talked with Zak smith (TBAC Rep) awhile back about running a 30-BA on my OBR... He said he's seen our exact set up run and run well. My paper work is in for my 30-BA... Now it's just a awaiting game.

Re: Changing brakes on a perfectly good OBR?

I currently Run Two 338 Surefire Brakes on two of my rifles and couldn't be more satisfied as far as Muzzle brakes are concerned.. I have a TRG-42 338lm and Gap-10 308 and both have the SF338 brake on them. I wouldn't trade them for any other...

Hmmm... M3 who distributes more SF than any other dealer in the world doesn't even offer them at that price to other dealers, so I'm curious where and how. Mind pming me the details?

Re: Changing brakes on a perfectly good OBR?

Ok guys, the Surefire I was referring to was for the .308, don't know if the 338 SF can be had for that price.

I'll PM info to those who asked, later tonight. I think the price may be a little higher now but it's still not out of the $1300-$1400 range.
