Changing horses in the middle of the stream....

I've been getting some stuff geared up for tactical shooting competitions next year, but I'm trying to cover my bases in case I can't make the shoots like I had planned on doing.
I'd planned on building a range gun (probably a .260) on the parts I've already bought..... a Manners T5A stock, a Surgeon 591R action, and a Surgeon DBM. I'd like to be able to salvage a medium weight hunting rifle from the change.
Any ideas on calibers that'll be suitable for coyotes to whitetails, and a barrel contour that'll make a rifle that isn't too heavy for short to medium walks to a stand?

So your scraping the original build totally and starting over or what? What parts are you for sure going to still use? I'd assume the same action atleast. Are you wanting a different stock? Are you wanting to keep it DMB or BDL? Did you not already have a barrel?

260 would do just fine for coyotes or whitetails. Have a 260 in a Brux #6 contour and its perfect. A little lighter than sendero contour and if you get one fluted with a brake, light and kicks about like a 243

Nope, everything is staying the same except the barrel contour, and I might even stick with the .260 caliber since I'm already loading for one and have all the stuff.
I don't have the barrel yet. I was thinking about a heavy sporter barrel to cut the weight down by a couple of pounds, but the extra width of the T5 stock looks like it would be more suited to at least a Sendero contour.
I've got a #3 Bartlein on a rifle, and all of my others are Varmint/Sendero type contours, so those are the only ones I'm familiar with.

As long as you are not humping up a mountain, a pound or two will hardly be noticed. I would stick with your original plan and get a good carrying sling.
