I don't have alot of money for highend scopes. I know good glass is a great thing to have. So what is a good cheap brand? Better yet which shitty scope brand is the least shitty? I will have about six hundred bucks to get two scopes. One for my VTR 308 and One for my VTR 223. Looking for mildot. 30mm tube. somewhere in the 6-24x50 area. Any ideas?

Re: Cheap Scopes

There are a few options..

1. Find a used Leupold
2. New Vortex Viper 6-20 x 50 with BDC
Good Value for Money.. see SWFA in the commercial section

btw, I have the vortex Viper noted above and have been very happy with it on my .22LR training rifle.. I have a NSX on my .308 so I have seen good glass.. I wouldn't be upset if I had to use the Vortex on my .308.. it's certainly good enough apart from low light conditions for instance..

Re: Cheap Scopes

Z,

I can't get you 2 for under $600, but I'll get you close.

Here's a link to a Falcon 5.5-25x FFP Mil/Mil for $475. I own one and it works pretty good, great scope for the money and features.

Although I don't own one I've seen a lot of guys around here speak well of SWFA's Super Sniper scope line in fixed powers like 10x 16x 20x etc. for the money. They are around $320 each.

You should also take a look at The Nikon Buckmaster line. You can order them from Midway. I've owned one of these and liked it a lot.

There's also a guy here in the "Hide" named Scott he owns and runs a company called Liberty Optics. He is super cool to deal with. My best advise would be for you to call him on the phone and get his thoughts, he will hook you up on your Budget.

If you look at my signature line you will find a link to a custom Google search that stays within the "Hide". You WILL find it very helpful.

Re: Cheap Scopes

Thanks guys. I don't have just a whole lot of money and I understand the importance of good glass. I also know saving up the money for good glass is one way to go but I can't shoot my rifles without any kind of glass.

Re: Cheap Scopes

Sir
depending on the type of shooting you intend to do I recommend the Super Sniper - it cost 1/2 of what you have so more money to practice! I have used a 20X on my .308 and 6mm BR from 100 to 1000 yards and have been happy and competitive with it.

Basically gallss is excellent but leave a littel to be desired at low light, tracks well, seems to be pretty much bullet proof at least for non-tactical shooting. Also have a Sightron III I got from Scott at Liberty Optics (super guy to deal with). A little more that you want to spend but a great scope also.

Re: Cheap Scopes

The Nikon Buckmaster is the best I've found in the $300 range, meets all your qualifications except the 30mm tube. I'd challenge you to determine whether you really NEED the travel of the 30mm tube. Remember, if you are wanting a 30mm tube you're implying that you are going to be dialing for range and if you are dialing for range on a $300 scope repeatability may be an issue.

I've been using a Buckmaster on my .22 trainer for 2 years, with no cant in the base I run out of elevation about 250yds but have never had an issue with repeatability.

Re: Cheap Scopes

Are you a casual shooter?

If so, +1 on the Super Sniper. I have one mounted on my M1A and it's worked out great. Super Snipers aren't top end glass, but they're pretty good. An incredible value for the money.

You could check out folks selling used ones, might save you a couple of bucks too.
