Rifle Scopes "cheaper" rings and bases

Re: "cheaper" rings and bases

I liked my EGW base on my last rifle, no problems with it. I set up a few friends with TPS rings. Again, no complaints. I read about a TPS ring breakage here and TPS was really bad for customer service. Buy from a reputable vendor so they'll deal with the manufacturer if there is an issue. Most of the vendors here are top shelf for customer service, and take care of SH members very well.

Re: "cheaper" rings and bases

I had a set of weaver "tactical" rings that I had mounted on my Savage 10 and then my FN PBR. On the cheap weaver bases on my Savage they fit pretty good and never allowed an POI shift. When I swapped them to the higher quality (and I assume to be more in "spec") Near rail on my FN they didn't fit that well, the clamping piece on the side of the ring didn't fit into the base when tightened down. They didn't cause any problems while I had them mounted for a few range sessions but I never trusted them totally so I swapped them out.

Re: "cheaper" rings and bases

Good to know.

I was looking at an EGW base and Weaver rings for a "short range" gun.

If they work out, I may just use them in the future for longer stuff.

Re: "cheaper" rings and bases

You get what you pay for!!

Personally, I wouldn't run anything Weaver produces on a precision rifle or one that I put my trust in to protect myself or others (or to otherwise not F--- up at a critical moment).

As for EGW, the only product of theirs that I am running is on a 10/22 (15MOA canted scope base), so I can't really comment on how well their gear will hold up on a centerfire rifle. I hear a lot of mixed reviews.

They are actually better. It is a closely kept secret, part of a greater conspiracy led by "the man" to keep us all beat down and poor.

Re: "cheaper" rings and bases

you can "get by" with cheaper stuff.

usually the more expensive stuff is more precisely made (better machining for better alignment) and are made of better quality materials (durability, strength, etc.) along with a more durable finish.

if competing, or if my life or livelyhood depended on something, i'd go with more expensive items (that has a reputation of being what they are worth). as far as casual shooting, you can usually go with cheaper stuff.

the drawback is that you may find that cheaper stuff tends to fail more often, even with casual shooting, then you are back to square one. rather than going cheap, mid ranged priced stuff that's known for a decent reputation is probably the best way to go.

like the saying goes, pay once - cry once.

i know it's tough on a budget, but worth waiting to make a purchase when at least enough is saving to invest in mid ranged priced stuff.

Re: "cheaper" rings and bases

I install EGW 20MOA bases on M700's, and never have any problems. I do bed them to the receiver with Devcon II, as this removes any stress and keeps things perfect. No problems with .308's or .300 WM.

I also use TPS STEEL rings on all my guns and again have no problems. I do belive they got the US Govt. ring contract...so they must be pretty darn good? Have used Mark 4 rings and don't think they are any better than the TPS steel rings (but twice the price).

Don't use Weaver stuff much...never have.

Re: "cheaper" rings and bases

I've used EGW bases in several configurations on a few factory rifles. Due to the interface geometry they are almost always bedded, I attribute this more to the consistency of the rear bridge on a Rem 700 or adapting a military Mauser than to EGW.

Overall I really like their options and pricing is decent.

As far as "bang for the buck" I think they're very high on the list. I've had several very high dollar bases in hand that when I inspected them the specs were quite out of tolerance, just because you pay $150 for a base doesn't guarantee it's right. It just guarantees you're going to be really pissed when it's wrong.

I no longer have the receiver, but I ran a Steel 20 MOA rail on a Rem700 for several thousand rounds without any issue to the rings or receiver. It never came loose or had issues and the rifle was used only for long range shooting, in excess of 600yd. Most shots were in the 1k range with some out as far as 1800.

Re: "cheaper" rings and bases

I use TPS STEEL base and rings and have never had a problem. They've never came loose and my POI has never shifted during a match. Overall, I'd rate them a 10 out of 10 for cost and effectiveness. Just make sure you go with steel.
