I Da ho
being the cheap MFr that I am I've been looking for the cheapest way to set gongs up out in the field. BLM land to be more specific. came up with this. surprisingly it can take a few hits at distance.

about $4.00 at HD is a 10' stick of ¼" rebar. cut in half and bent on the vise to make a sheapards crook hanger.

Looks good!

Nice of Black Lives Matter to lease you their land 🤪

I was turned on to these by an instructor and I've been very pleased so far. T-posts are cheap and easy to put in or take out. The pricing on the targets makes me think they're not really AR500 or somehow got some cheaper grade of it. Personally, I've switched over to all 1/2" plates and even those get a little beat up over time by rifle fire.

Get these hangers

Then get whatever sized steel plate you want and all you have to do is pound in the t post wherever you want it, put on the twist lock, and then put the plate on it. Only issue I've had is that the t posts will loose a chunk when a miss hits them. Wasn't me, must have had some friends make a bad shot or two. :)

Ive looked at those. do they only work with their plates that have the keyhole or any plate? $13 hanger + $6 T-post. $40 for a Tpost Driver.

As a former welder and custom metal fabricator, I’d say, the cheapest gong hanger would be some 1.5” x 1.5” .250” wall square tube, a welder, a bandsaw, a tape measure, some lengths of chain, some good Rustoleum spray paint, and a “can do” attitude. 👍🏼

IF(big if) someone made exactly what I wanted I probably couldn't afford it..so I build my own.

where do you get the rubber straps?

my previous multi gong rack involves misc electrical conduit connections and chains.
I attached each gong to a section of conduit that can swing freely. this reduced the stress on everything and made setup easier.

old conveyor belt or rubber horse stall mats will cut up into nice hanging straps.

Those are just 1/4"x2" rubber gasket strips that come in 16' rolls. Got a couple rolls at the surplus store for $5. I tried chains for years but they they only take a couple hits near a plate and she gone... The rubber takes a good bit of abuse and just hangs in there.

I will say the chains on mild steel sound much better with that loud ping we all live to hear, they just don't put up with much under 300yd without cratering. The ar500 with rubber is just a dull smack. I'll take the later of the two to not have to rehang a target after a new shooter kills a chain.

they work great and are cheap as rod and plate in your area
or 2x4's plate and fasteners .

we got ours from a home and garden shop in our area , But have seen them in Lows , and other hardware stores I think cabellas also sell one priced for shooters but add gun related to anything and the price jumps way up . Another great idea someone else posted was bending your own rod iron or cheap rod steel into the shape you wanted you could also control height a lot better with that method I like the diy idea's they are generally cheaper store bought gun related items seem cheap in quality but expensive in price .

A decade and a half ago, I rebuilt a range. they had a great steel gong but no place to put it. So, I built a sold hanger out of 4x4’s. Mounted it at 125 yards. (Seemed like a decent distance, not too close, not too far) Excellent marksmen  that the folks that used that range were.…They damn near shot the 4x4;s to pieces. And the gong was a solid foot in each direction from wood. (It was obvious they were trying to hit the gong and not the wood because the shots were so random.).

Sounds like the rednecks around here that leave a hunting rifle beating around in the back of a truck for 9 months, take it to the range 2 days before open season, and use an entire box of ammo to sight it in. I've had them accidentally shoot my target 5' away during one of said range sessions. Just making an observation...

Speaking of “marksmen.” Once while at the range a fellow was trying to sight in his rifle with a friend. The first target was at 50 yards and they apparently were not even close to the paper. So, the fellow with the rifle blurts out…”What should we do, move the target out to 100 yards?”

(I’ve told this story before but it sure needs repeating. The lack of basic firearm knowledge that besets some folks, frightens me to know end. KNOWING, they might be in a hunting stand, less than a mile from me.).

Cheapest gong hanger?
That would be the ones you get paid to make at work on a slow day,
out of materials salvaged from the company scrap bin,
to utilize the plethora of RR tie plates you found piled in the woods on the back corner of the companys property.😁

I've got a roll of 2" fire hose I've been working though. But I've hung it on just about everything. One of my favorite stands for years has been 3x of rebar and 2x 90° emt elbows. The problem I have is pounding them into the ground so I've started to move to the amazon/EMT options.

An auger bit on a cordless Milwaukee/DeWalt should make quick work enough to set them up. No more pounding

I mean if one was really inclined a hammer drill and masonry bit would give a pretty secure way to affix a gong to a rock.
That would be pretty sweet. Some of those rocks are pretty crazy. But mostly what I run into is these 6"-8" rocks that you can never seem to dodge with a T post or rebar. I might have to try doing some climbing and putting a gong in some stupid place though.
