Checking bullet runout - where to check

Re: Checking bullet runout - where to check

I check the bullet about where the ojive comparator tool touches the bullet, I use a Sinclair Concentricity tool, but I'm thinking about buying a NECO tool because it will measure more things

Re: Checking bullet runout - where to check

I know guys who check it in either of those places. I guess it's just what you would prefer. Whichever place you check it, the tool will move enough for you to get a good readout. While I've seen it done, unfortunately I don't own a run-out tool yet but it's in my near future.

Re: Checking bullet runout - where to check

I check it just past the end of the neck, no need to check too far down the ogive. Or you could check where the bullet engages the rifling (where bearing surface ends/ ogive begins)

Re: Checking bullet runout - where to check

at the ogive, i have the Bersin tool , i have the Sinclair one to. you know if your case mouth isnt concentric , your bullet isnt going to be either, i think.

Re: Checking bullet runout - where to check

I check at the ogive.....mainly because the tool I use allows you to adjust/correct the run out and it is easier to adjust at that part of the bullet. I use a Hornady concentricity tool.

Made my gauge on the bridgeport...

Infinately adjustable to anywhere on the cartridge, from .223's to the RUM's. Four bearings to roll on, usually on the neck and the "pressure ring" though, for my purposes.

Even has an adjuster built in to tweek 'em, if need be.

Wanna open your eyes to a whole 'nuther set of headaches?

Measure the case head runnout (squareness) in relation to bore/chamber.

Try it on some virgin, or some once fired....you'll be amazed at what you find, even on the "good" brass.
