Chop 1:12 twist 308???

I have a Rem 700 SPS varmint 308 1:12 twist. The barrel is the factory 26".

Presently debating chopping it down to around 20" (+/-2") and having a muzzle break installed.

In hindsight I wish I would have gotten the Tac rather than the varmint; I would loose too much selling and buying the Tac now. I used this gun deer hunting this past season and the over-all size is just too large to suit my needs. Max range I would every shoot this rifle is 600 and that would simply be target. I shoot 150, 165, and 168 Gr loads.

Reading online I see a lot of mixed reviews on 1:12 twists, please advise!

Had my 26" rem cut to 18 and it shot 175 smk to 800m just fine. If the farthest you will ever shoot is 600 and not in competitions I wpuld go 16.5"

My SPS varmint 308s are cut to 20" and 22". I like that as a good compromise between handling and performance.

I shoot them to 1000+ all the time with 208 AMax.

I'm trying to convince my friend to cut his 26" rem 700 varmint sps as well since he bought an AAC suppresor for it.we hardly ever shoot past 600 yds . I cut my 24" to 18" it was a 12 twist and I still had no issues with velocity once I handloaded with Imr Xbr powder. Using 175 smk ,42.3 xbr ,win brass I was safely seeing 2625 fps. I had no issues staying on a12" steel plate at 975 yds in one occasion we shot at a friends ranch.
