i've been leeching for a while and borrowing a shooting buddy's chrony.

whats a good chrony for catching some .308 bullets velocity?

i'd also like to buy from a SH vendor to support the site. So if you sell them please post here

i don't need top of the line. $200 absolute max

Re: chronograph recomendation

Agreed... if your seriously into your shooting and handloading the Oehler is probably the best you could get.

The CED M2 is also a great model at a much lower price.

I'm seriously into this hobby but after seeing some posts here where the CED M2 reads within a few fps of an Oehler it looks really tempting to save a few hundred and go with the CED. I gave up on my shooting crony after using a friend's Oehler, the controls are just too bizarre.

That's true but the kicker is WHEN it reads. Oehler dosen't miss many shots can't say same for CED M2 I had.

Re: chronograph recomendation

I had a very bad experience with the CED M2, and ended up shooting it to pieces. It was unreliable in every way and after about a half dozen range trips it stopped reading at all. I had read enough bad customer service experiences from CED to know that I probably wouldnt be reimbersed for my troubles. Do a Google search and you will find other haters.

I have this one waiting for me when I get home. I have a Chrony Beta, which will be shot to hell next time at the range and replaced it with the Oehler 35p. I decided not to mess around with the f'ed up readings I was getting. Also, I was wasting time and money using a Chrony. How can you figure out what your load is, when your Chrony is not accurate. By once cry once.

Re: chronograph recomendation

I feel like I could write a book on chrono saga.

Own:
PACT Mark IV Chrono with two timers/computers (more for IPSC practice redundancy as both have had issues and had to be sent in for repair). Granted, they get used as shot timers quite a bit so they take some abuse.
Quick Take: not bad, have had to replace each skyscreen over 12 years of use. It's quick to set up. I have the HP printer that is discontinued so I could get a printout which I really like.
Tracked extremely consistently with chrono results I get at major IPSC/USPSA matches over the years so GTG for pistol.
LR Rifle: not bad but definitely not the best.
I'm not a fan of PACT's CS. I've had to call them a few times over the years and I'm always made to feel stupid and that I'm really inconveniencing them when I call. WTF? OK, maybe I am stupid...

CED (from a prize table): I know many like it. I'm not in that camp. I don't have the infrared sensors. Over the std sensors I was getting consistently 20+fps readings higher than my PACT. I didn't realize it until I almost went Minor at USPSA Nationals -- came down to a final bullet weighing for those that understand the process. Sweat city.
It's quick to set up and I like the function of the computer.

Oehler: I'm shooting far more LR rifle these days so I finally bit the bullet. I've only used my 35 2x but I am impressed. Having the 3rd control sensor is key, imo. I know my data is spot on now. I love the piece of mind.
Granted, it takes longer to set up than my PACT or CED. But, for this application, it's worth the time. I enjoyed the CS experience dealing with the Oehler folks. Nice that it comes with a case. The integrated printer is definitely a plus.

Don't own:
I've shot over many Chrony's over the years. For quick checks expecially for pistol they always seem OK. I would not base my LR dope sheet on those results though. Personal preference for sure. For the price, they are pretty hard to beat as you get some data to work from for far less money.
I'm amazed at how many people reload w/o chrono data -- get a $100 Chrony for god's sake.

Re: chronograph recomendation

Depends on what you are going to use it for.

When I load, I load for the results on the target. I don't much care what the box tells me.

What I do need a chronograph for is to tell me what my loads are doing at different temperatures and to get a good MV for ballistic calculations.

I just use a simple Shooting Chrony F1. It does what I need and is compact and simple (although fiddly) to set up.

Re: chronograph recomendation

Where can you get the oehler nowadays? The only place i've found it is at their site and it's 535$ for the entire package. Wish i could find it cheaper. I don't have that kinda money at the moment. Even if i did i would be hard pressed to want to put it into a scope or other plans i have.

Re: chronograph recomendation

Blackops, I have had one since last december. I have used a chrony also. I would say the chrony I had should be used for paintball and that covers that. The Oehler 35p is worth the coin in my opinion. They have outstanding customer service with a quality product. It will come in a hard case and ready to go to the range. Developing loads and duplicating loads would be considerably easier with a consistant chrono.
