Guys, I have never owned a chronograph. I have very little experience with them, having only put maybe 50 rounds through friends'.

I am at the point in my reloading that I am considering picking up one. My hesitance is mostly because of the hassle they appear to be. From what I can tell, they are pretty finicky beasts. I have several buddies who own chronos but rarely bother with messing with them. Mostly because they dread setting them up. They only break them out when absolutely necessary.

I am wondering if there are any chronographs out there that are specifically designed to be accurate as well as convenient. Which ones should I consider? I doubt it makes any difference, but the majority of the use will come with 308 and 338LM. If possible, I would love to be able to chronograph arrow speeds with my compound bow as well. Mostly just for curiousitys sake.

I am curious if there is something out there like this as well, although I doubt I would trust it. I know setting up is a PITA, especially for me (I have to use it at a public range :p ) but that's the kinda info that you want to be as dead nuts accurate as possible...

Hydro,

I have a thread on last week asking about chrono's, and the consensus in advice was a CED chrono, with the infared upgrade.
I am looking to pick one up. Check out my thread and there is some great information.

Re: Chrono's: 101

hydro, you know since you bought the Quickload it is used with the PVM-21 chrono. All the data from it automatically goes right into Quickload.
The group buy went so well the guy from Neco said we could do a group buy on their chrono as well. It is higher in price than most chrono's but it is supposed to be the best thing next to Doppler radar.

Re: Chrono's: 101

I have the Chrono Master and it is not too difficult to set up. It is a huge help to know how fast your loads are actually going. Especially when you are trying to get things dialed in for long distance. I have easily chronographed everything from .22 lr to 50 BMG. When it comes to individual rifles and barrel lenghts, etc. the velocities printed in the reloading books are not always right (sometimes not even close), so it is nice when you can confirm/verify velocities thru a chrono

I have had several and am lucky enough to currently have an Ohler P35. So far it is the best I have seen. every once in awhile you will see one on Gun Broker that sells for $500-$700. I just staple my print outs to my targets in my load book.

I'll sell him one for $650, he just has to ask

Re: Chrono's: 101

Just don't get a Shooting Chrony based on my experience. I had one and switched to the CED M2. The CED is a much better unit, but still gives me some strange #'s at times or no #'s at all. You would think a super accurate, work all the time chrono would be easy with the technology we have today, but I guess not.

Re: Chrono's: 101

Any time you take a shot in practice with using a Chrono YOU ARE WASTING VALUABLE INFO!! Whenever possible, I shoot over my CED.
