cleaning dies

Re: cleaning dies

First of all I polish dies when I get them with Flitz or JB on a 3/8" dowel if .308 ( split to hold patch). Then on a regular basis clean with Hoppes. About year or so I do the dowel polish again just for 15-30 sec.

or even lubricated 1000 grit sandpaper on a dowel or old bore brush on an old rod chucked in a not-so-old drill. Spin the crap out of it - get rough with it. Won't hurt a thing. They too hard to hurt, just don't drill on it for hours n hours!

Re: cleaning dies

Berryman's carburetor cleaner and Q-tips. Dip the Q-tip in the carb cleaner and rub it up inside the die. I use this for new dies and cleaning out dirty dies. I keep a large box of Q-tips on the bench for cleaning everything. If the sizing die has some build-up, I'll use a naked Q-tip to remove the build-up to keep sizing. A lot of guys also use standard brake cleaner.

Re: cleaning dies

I use a chamber brush wrapped with narrow strands of steel wool. I follow this up with patches and acetone, and finish with a light oiling using Hoppe's.
