+1 Same there.

Re: Cleaning Pistol Brass

The only brass I decap first is match grade rifle brass. Everything else goes into the big blue tumbler first. I look inside every case when I get it out of the sifter. If I can't get it with a paper clip or small screwdriver, the decapping pin on the Dillon 650 catches it.

Stainless Steel. Was introduced to it here on The Hide. Clean takes on a whole new level.

Re: Cleaning Pistol Brass

I tumble my brass to avoid scratching my dies as well as my chamber.
For those of you who deprime before tumbling what keeps the dirty brass from scratching your dies? It doesn't tear them up immediately, but over time it seems like it would wear the dies.

Re: Cleaning Pistol Brass

pepperbelly-Universal depriming die is what most use to deprime prior to tumbling.

I just tumble with primers personslly then toss them on the progressive.....

Rifle I am a bad bad person and Fl size before tumbling and tumble just long enough to get the lube off. Probably hard on the dies, but they still work after 5+ years of doing it the bad way. I don't mind ugly brass, and hate brass prep.

Re: Cleaning Pistol Brass

Sobrbiker. ever since I started using Imperial sizing die wax I don't tumble after sizing my rifle brass. I just wipe the cases with a towel after they come out of the sizing die. Since there is so little wax on the case this is all it takes. It has really speeded up sizing brass.

Chiller, for many years I would not deprime my .45 amnd 9mm brass before tumbling. I would run it through the tumbler and then load it on a Dillon 550. Never had any problems. I reciently bought some of the stainless media and have been depriming before tumbling. I like this way better. The press stays cleaner and you have a better feel when the primer seats in the bottom of the pocket. Either way it wont affect the quality of your ammo.

JIm- wipe your rifle brass down with a damp rag of Isopropol alcohol(91%), before putting them away after you load them. This insures your cases are perfectly clean. I, too, use imperial sizing wax. None better.

Chiller

I have been reloading and shooting .45acp for close to 10 years now, and with the exception of the first 300 or so I have never de-capped on before cleaning. If I were shooting target pistol with the NRA it might be different, but I have not seen a difference in accuracy to date by putting a primer down on top of teh drity primer pocket.

you know that I am anal as hell about cleaning rifle brass, so that might say something...maybe not..but there it is.

Re: Cleaning Pistol Brass

I shoot NRA Bullseye Pistol with a 1911 .45acp. Some friends and I tried different things to see if it helped our scores. We sorted brass, etc. It really didn't make much difference, and we shoot in the mid to high 800's for the centerfire and .45 portions of the 2700 match. All of us just throw the brass in to tumble then decap and load.
I guess if you were hunting with a pistol at 100 yards or more it might help a little, but powder selection, charge and bullet weight and design seems to make the most difference. Primer choice seems to do very little. The only time brass comes into play is if someone gets some military brass. Since the walls are thicker a powder charge used in commercial brass will develope higher pressure, so we all tend to just use commercial brass.
I don't sort mine by manufacturer, but some do. We really can't tell any difference, but it makes us feel better if we are shooting a high level match. It probably helps some, butsince all shooting is off-hand with a single hand it doesn't have as much effect as if we were shooting off a rest.

Re: Cleaning Pistol Brass

Chiller:

I deprime my pistol brass prior to tumbling. Like stated prior it keeps my Dillon cleaner and makes seating primers a tad easier in my opinion.

I give my son a bin of brass and let him punch primers. He loves doing it so have at it.

Rifle brass I deprime at the range with a Lee hand press and universal decapping die. I then toss the brass in a 2 liter bottle with Warm water, ivory soap, and Lemi shine. Typically when I get home from doing this it has been 1hr to 1.5hrs of soaking. 2-3 hrs in the Thumlers and SS media your good as new.

I always lean toward clean!
