So i heard this guy speak about how often he cleans his barrel. he said he cleaned his 308 MAYBE every 800-1000 rounds. is this normal for long range shooting.... InBeen brought up to clean your barrel after every hunt, or time in the field.

Re: Cleaning your barrel

It doesn't need to be cleaned after every time out. Only if you are going to be taking long breaks in between shooting.

Some of my cowboy action pistols only get cleaned once a year or every 1k rounds ... whichever comes first. Lead buildup in the barrel is desired in some of these older style six shooters.

Listen to the gun, it will talk to you. It'll let you know when it needs cleaned. If you are an occasional shooter then it is good practice to clean and put it away till next time. We shoot ours every week and finally got in the practice of cleaning the LR rifles and our LR pistols at about 400 rounds. Last year the LR pistols got cleaned after about 1000 rounds and they still shot very well but now we just do them all at the 400 round mark. The barrels only take a light scrubbing and a couple patches and accuracy has never varied with this routine.

I have a 5 1/2" Browning Buckmark 22LR pistol that has at least 10,000 rounds thru it and has never had the barrel cleaned. The action will get scrubbed and oiled when it gets sticky but that is it. No lie but it has a 2X pistol scope on it and is sighted in for 200 yards and I'll guarantee that the first shot out of it will hit a 12" square every time.

Each gun is different, I think in the old days guns weren't shot as much and they needed to be put away clean and oiled. I think the barrels/ammo are much better quality now also but if cleaning it after each use makes you feel better than by all means do it. You may also find that a gun will shoot the first few rounds a bit different after cleaning and not being fouled.

Experiment a bit and find what you and your gun are comfortable with.

It's not normal unless you tested it and are comfortable with it.

Let your cleaning routine lax and rifle safely stored multiple times in fouled fashion. Its not going to rot away.
Then in future practice outing, bring the cleaning gear to range and exercise well within a fixed condition periodic shoot. Now you have "cold shooter", "cold bore" and clean bore data in same conditions. See how your rifle responds and go from there.
