I have been shooting for many years and have received formal training with pistol, shotgun and semi-auto rifles through my job. A few years back, I bought a .308 bolt gun with the intentions of learning the craft and loading my own rounds. Of late, I seemed to have hit a plateau and just wasn't satisfied anymore with learning by my own mistakes. Last October, I made the commitment to myself to seek out some formal instruction and finally see if I could gain some ground.

I looked around and read multiple reviews online and in magazines about a formal precision rifle training course. I was looking for something that was reputable, semi-local (within reasonable driving distance) and in my price range. My research lead me to one of our fellow Hide members training at North Texas Rifle Precision. Of course, since becoming a member of this forum, I had seen his humorous posts and frequent ban sessions. One thing I noticed after speaking to him on the phone about the possibility of attending his training was that Jay (NTRP-CKA) knew his craft and had no instructor complex.

I signed up for the Precision Rifle 1 and Precision Rifle 2 courses and locked in the last weekend in January. I spoke to CKA several times by PM and on the phone ensuring that I had all of the gear that I needed for the courses. He talked to me about my equipment and verified that my hand-loads were sufficient to reach max distance. I arrived in the afternoon on Friday and CKA took me on a tour of his facility and we reviewed his steel target locations. Everything was loose and he fell in with the kind of guys that I run with at work. The first training morning, his demeanor remained loose, but his dedication to safe training in a professional manner was evident. He still kept you at ease, without compromising safety.

Our first rounds down range verified my zero. He adjusted my scope location and we started on the fundamentals. I had a bad run and was about to take up golf, when he got my mind right and within a couple of hours, I was on target at 750 and 1000 yards. It was nothing magic. He showed me how to overcome 30+ years of mistakes and bad habits. I was truly amazed at how much I progressed in a short time by having someone move me in the right direction. There are numerous targets to engage, that keep you challenged.

Day two was more positional shooting and shooting on & around obstacles.

My biggest surprise was when he was leaving to go down range to paint the targets, he told me that when he got back, I had lost the use of my right eye while shooting. Low and behold, because I had to focus so much on the fundamentals and didn't have weak side bad habits built up, I shot better left handed than with my dominant side.

The day ended with running about 100 rounds through my gun at 750 and 1000. I was astounded at how far I had come in less than two days. My natural point of aim, body position, breathing, and trigger control had become muscle memory and I was truly driving my rifle like I never had before.

I would highly recommend attending the training at NTRP to anyone who is wanting to show improvement in your shooting or to anyone who is starting new. The number one reason that training is a success or failure is dependant upon the student. If you cannot become comfortable enough to allow yourself to learn, you won't succeed in your endeavor. CKA, despite his Internet celebrity status, is one hell of an instructor that caters to your learning style and makes you reach your potential.

Re: Client Review - NTRP PR1 & PR2

You are correct. I have set a new standard for a weak hand 1000 yard tweety bird in flight confirmed kill. I should have kept the lil fella and had it mounted.

We had a great time. I appreciate the opportunity to earn your business, bro. By the end of Sunday he was on like donkey-kong. Here are some more pics:

Ignore all the shotgun shells. They aren't part of the class. I bought a shotgun I didn't need under extreme duress two weeks ago so we broke it in.

Oh not to mention this too!. Not to repost but GardDog223 is also the new bird slayer:

This morning we were shooting weak side at 1000 yards. The client hit the steel and I saw what I thought was something flying off the center of the target. I asked if he saw it and he didn't. I couldn't figure out what the hell flew off the center of the target and then up over the height of the steel.

Later, I went down to paint the targets and saw the little bird. I laughed so hard. The bullet hit the steel the exact second the bird flew in front of the target. The grenade-like shrapnel from the copper jacketing killed the bird.

Here he is with his 1000 yard kill:

Your Saints lovin ass killed wildlife in TEXAS without an out of State hunting liscene, I'm telling!

Another win for CKA and GD223, the range improvements look good.

Re: Client Review - NTRP PR1 & PR2

I agree with your write up there GardDog, I did a class with Jay back in November and my shooting has improved leaps and bounds! Jay has lowered my handicap to +1 too. What a fun day that was, I still smile like a shit eating possum! I hope I can get to the range day to meet you boys.

PS. for Jay
Crown and Benelli, double tall!! Sorry we did that to you Jay, you still have to spend another $5k to get even with the dragon quest you have sent me on!

Re: Client Review - NTRP PR1 & PR2

Very nice review. Looks like you had a great time. Once you get past all the fun and games you learn something real quick, CKA knows his shit. He has taught me more in a few days of training and hanging out then I learned in months of trying to figure it out from stuff I read on the internet. If you are like me you spend way more money then you should on gear, reloading components and gadgets than you would ever consider spending on training. That is a mistake I recognized and why I am now on the books for my third time training with Jay (my one-on-one train up for the Cup). The more you progress, the more you realize there is still so much more to learn. Its money well spent to have someone pushing you to reach your goals.

Sounds like a heck of a time John, hopefully I can meet more of the fellow Team NTRP members at future team range days.

427Cobra,
I hoped you could have stopped by. I still owe you for the hardware you loaned me for the rail install. Maybe next trip I can buy you a beer.

I started to wear a Saints sweatshirt out to the range, but it was 78 degrees. What a difference a couple days make.... Geez, what was it today? 17 degrees?

Well said. Now that I have faith in my gear and my load, I have no excuses to not practice what I learned.

Re: Client Review - NTRP PR1 & PR2

Glad to see another shooter making the decision to shoot with NTRP. As you can see from the pics, he is serious about his business and always upgrading his facility. You won't find a better source to train with one on one. No other students during your training and you will have the whole range to yourself. The range is set up so you don't have to start and stop all the time. That all means more time focused on you shooting. If you want to get the most out of your training budget and have a great time, call and set a training date with Jay at NTRP.

Let me know before you go.... I can recommend his adult beverage of choice, for after the day of shooting is done. He is a refined man, with fancy tastes.

Fuck no. I don't drink Stewart's pink elephant beer or your pine cone whiskey. Huffing gold spray paint puts you the same place that stuff does but cheaper.

Oatmeal + Brats + Schlitz Blue Bull = Hazmat. Trust me.

Re: Client Review - NTRP PR1 & PR2

I have to add that the training I received during these courses became evident during a recent hunting trip. I have stayed in practice with my bolt guns after attending the training, but never correlated hunting with the instruction. I got an opportunity to take a shot on a good turkey. I shouldered my shotgun and without having to think about it, I had ensured proper level of the weapon and placed my index finger on the trigger in the correct position. After squeezing off the shot, I kept the trigger pulled until the recoil impulse had ceased. Without having to think about it, I had improved the handling of my hunting weapon, which resulted in an effective shot.

Anyone thinking that this kind of training isn't for them because they don't shoot in competitions can still bring back improvements that they never envisioned. I was impressed by the fact that the lessons learned can be used in all platforms, not just competition shooting.

Re: Client Review - NTRP PR1 & PR2

It's been several months since I attended the training at NTRP, but I've done my best to stay in practice with the fundamentals learned during the courses. I posted in the Hunting Section after I realized that lessons learned with my bolt gun translated to better handling of my shotgun during turkey season. Well, once again, I wanted to inform anyone that might be on the fence about attending training with CKA that I saw real results from attending the training. I recently attended annual in-service for my job and I saw definite improvement in my long gun & pistol handling during qualification. I have been doing this since I was 21 and have always held my own shooting for score, but I saw how lessons learned with my bolt gun helped my form and trigger control with all my weapons. You have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain by spending a weekend with CKA.
