Movie Theater COAL is on Spike

Re: COAL is on Spike

Holy shit! That's got to be one of the shittiest jobs! I can't believe they walk around on their knees like that. I just kept thinking about the movie October Sky.

I hope it pays well!

Is it like the show depicts? Is the ceiling really that low?

Re: COAL is on Spike

Binder,.. October Sky was in Coalwood -- Same county as all of this. Homer Hickam (Go Hokies!!) is a great story and there are many of us that made it out (even in 80's) and went to do something different. But yeah..the seams that are all in there now run 24 to 37 inches... has to be a min of 44" for the bolt and DMS regs.

Back in the day.. we had seams of 22 FEET!! But that was before continuous miners or longwall miners.. they picked it with ax and shovel and loaded it with donkeys ... you got paid by the ton and you got Company Script.. not US dollars.. and it was only good at the store the company owned (and the prices were high enough for you to just run short each week so you Owed your Soul to the Company Store)

I'm not a miner, but my Dad, Grandad, Great-Grandad (died at 32 in the Mine) all were... My wife's lineage is the same.. it becomes a part of you.

Re: COAL is on Spike

I have to say, I had grandfathers who were miners, uncles as well. My dad's father was in mining when the used donkeys. BUT it is a lot different being a miner's wife. Affects you differently.

VA Gentleman is right. I've been in two mines. One was a "punch mine" that was being operated by a family member around Welch. Ceiling was very low, water was a problem. AND when Jon worked for Consol, they had family day where they took us to certain areas of the mine. I was five months pregnant, going over 1500 feet underground. It was an experience to say the least. I could actually stand fully upright in a lot of places, got to see the longwall, etc. I have so much respect for what these men do.

Jon headed out this morning at his usual time of 5:30 across 14 mountain. It certainly has changed and keeps changing. I am heading that way later myself as my parents are still in Iaeger. Not the place it used to be for sure, but it's still home.

Re: COAL is on Spike

Being as I work at a coal fired power plant in CA, I really appreciate what these guys do and their families for allowing them to do it. So thanks to all of you who are in the industry or have family members in it.

I just wish the government and the ignorant liberals felt the same...
