Should Aluminum rings be coated with something after lapping. I a concerned with the Al oxidizing as the factory anodizing/coating is damaged or removed by the lapping process.

Re: Coating Aluminum Rings after lapping?

If the lapping process removes enough plating to expose the bare aluminum I'd chuck the rings and go by some new ones.

A little oil on the bare aluminum should prevent contact with air on an installed set of rings.

The aluminum black works too.

If you want to go really over the top, you can Type II anodize them in a small cooler. Look around the net a bit if you're interested, there's plenty of resources. But I agree with John F, if the rings were that far out of alignment you might consider investing in a higher quality set.

USMCj, Thanks for the tip on the AL Black. I ran out and got some.

As for the rings, These are brand new TPS rings, I just received a set of AL and Steel super lows. They were both out of alignment. I had issues with the Warne base not fitting either of the 700 SA actions that I was working on, which confounded things from the start. Luckily I caught it early. The Warne base fit the rear of both actions perfectly, but did not seat on the front of the actions, it hovered above the front of the actions. I've been surveying various mounts and rings. Of the bases that I have on hand the Badger was the only one that fit both actions, nice and flat and square. I am still waiting on my Seekins order. I was really hoping to use the Warne rails, as they are steel and the lowest available. Another down side to the Warne rails are the small number of slots for and aft, forcing you to mount the rings rather close together.

The TPS Steel rings were way way way out. I'd have had to hone them all day. I've got pictures. I'll either post them here or on AR-15, where I have image hosting space. Thanks for all your help.

Wow, really? You have any of those rings you want to chuck my way?

I really wish there was a 3 month waiting period before new members could post!

Sure thing.
But you'll have to wait 3 months for me to get them into the envelope.
You'll have to wait 3 months for me to get the label stuck on.
You'll have to wait 3 months for me to write down the address.
You'll have to wait 3 months for me to put a stamp on it.
You'll have to wait 3 months for me to get to the post office.

Then you'll have to wait 3 months for me to decide if I want to put it in the mail box.

Hopefully in 18 months I'll have forgotten you are one of the subservient Kalifonication sheeple.

Have a nice day.
