Cold Blue Shotgun Receiver (Suggestions)

So I have this Remington 1100 3" Magnum receiver I want to Cold Blue, and I watched a 30 minute video were a guy goes in detail on using the birchwood casey kit, but I also see a lot about the oxpho-blue kit from brownells.

I know prep work is 100% of the job almost, but any tips or suggestions or preferences you guys could give?

I tried the Birchwood Casey kit on an old H&R .410 that I had stuck in the back of the gunsafe. I spent several hours while watching TV, cleaning and prepping everything as meticulously as possible. I followed the cold blue directions to a T. When it was all said and done, the finish was so hideous that I stuffed it back into the guncase as deeply as possible. It is the ugliest gun I own.

Just wondering did you have it down to basically metal? I see a lot of people say mix things about the Birchwood kit.

Hours of steel wool. I don't thinks there was any original finish left. To be fair though, I had that plastic package of Cold Blue sitting around in my basement for probably 5 or 6 years. Perhaps the product has a shelf life? Maybe it requires some factory bluing to adhere to? Or maybe that old H&R is low quality steel. All I know is that it wasn't what I was expecting.
If everyone had my results, the couldn't still that product. It must be working well for others.

Thanks for feedback though, I know probably not worth the whole 30 minutes of watching but this guy doesn't stop and he shows you the whole process...seems to work.

My understanding is that bluing is a chemical reaction or conversion of the steel surface. Cold Bluing is more like a "stain" that is applied to the steel surface. I wouldnt have an issue cold bluing as a touchup, but in my experience, the finished bluing was not even close to being uniform once dried and cured. I dont know how well that finish translates in the video.
I also feel that that may not have been his first try with the stuff, considering the guy is ate up enough to make a 30 minute video and all.

I'll test it on the magazine tube, and record it with my gopro see how it goes, but thanks for the info.

I have done a couple flintlocks with 44/40 and had decent results. Prep is everything and a couple passes with the bluing worked best for me. It's not the most durable finish but it has done fine on my cheap smokepoles. I've got a couple worn places after a few seasons of hand carrying but other than that, I'm happy with it.
