Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB32). AB32 specifically required that 50 percent of California’s electricity to be powered by “green energy,” aka wind and solar, by 2025 and 60 percent by 2030, ending in 100% “carbon free” energy by 2045. Now, California is paying the price for abandoning reliable energy sources in favor of green energy sources such as wind and solar power, which don’t work when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine. During heat waves like California is experiencing now, there’s typically plenty of sunshine, but winds are often stagnant.”

This is one of the many reasons this election matters so immensely. Biden/Harris are declaring war on energy, and every citizen will get hit by their effects. This stretches far beyond fracking and Pennsylvania jobs.
 
300 years of coal to burn. Who knows how much gas and we want to live with rolling black outs and some puke governor running his life on a diesel generator.

Suckers.
 
So... there’s absolutely nothing wrong with getting away from fossil fuels and going to clean, renewable energy sources. We actually have it in so-called “nuclear power,” but the Demwits are against that too, and prefer going full Soylent Green.

Interesting times ahead.

Something that is going to be interesting to see is frequency regulation with the reduction of rolling iron on the grid. When you have a bunch of rolling iron base load plants on the grid it provides a stable frequency regulation. Electronic frequency regulation is going to be a challenge in a large grid, especially during transients. Every year more and more large rolling iron gets removed from the grid. Even last week or week before during the heat wave there was a significant deficit of generation capacity that resulted in load shedding. Paying 30+ cents a kWh and reduced reliability is stupid.

Sad to see Diablo go. That's a good running plant with a ton of life left in it. Hard to beat Nuclear for base load carbon free energy. Just a smashing atoms.

They will be paying 50+ cents like Germany does within a couple years. I just wish Oregon, Nevada, Arizona would tell them to pound sand make your own power.

Funny how nuke plants really aren’t that sophisticated. “Nuclear power” is a bit of a misnomer. The actual “nuclear” atom-splitting doesn’t generate useful power. It just literally boils water, which in turn spins big copper coils that in turn create electric current.

It’s essentially the same way we’ve been doing it for over 100 years. Steam turbines making EeeeLEKtrisitty!
 
Load following in places like cal. Is very difficult. Peak demand in the morning and evening followed by peak generation for renewables in the middle of the day. Just think if your a base load unit that can ramp maybe 5-10 mw/ min sitting on the bottom at 5am ramping to full load for 6:30 and back to the bottom around 10am when demand goes down and renewables come on line, then doing it again that evening. That makes for less efficient generation and wreaks havoc on equipment and reliability. It’s really hard on conventional steam boiler units. CT’s can chase load better but they have the problem that was mentioned earlier, they don’t have the rotating mass or inertia to keep every thing running smooth from a frequency standpoint. When you are running on the edge and you loose a big unit you get a dip in frequency, that rolling weight in the system is what keeps things moving until other units ramp up to meet demand. To be reliable you need about 6mw of conventional generation backing up 10mw of renewables, this is known by everyone that’s a balancing authority or in system modeling, to say they didn’t know this would happen is an outright lie.
